Ivan F. Black Cloud, 70 of Fort Totten, ND died on Sunday afternoon, December 12, 2010 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
A Wake for Ivan will be held at the Fort Totten Recreation Center, Fort Totten on Monday, December 20th beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Monday from Wal-Mart.
Mass of Christian Burial for Ivan will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten. Fr. Charles Leute OP will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Jerome’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Fort Totten.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Ivan will be Lydell Jones, Richard Desjarlais, Brendon Belgarde, Napoleon Fournier, Jerritt Desjarlais and William “Bill” Tomahawk, Jr.
Honorary Bearers will be members of the VFW Post #6547, Greg and LaVonne Feather, Verol Greywater, Bob Greywater, Demus McDonald, Jack Daupinais, Bobby Jetty, Justin DuBois, Roger Herman, Alfreida and Bob Charboneau, Alberta Dunn, Ted Snell, Manuel Littlewind Sr., Dave Longie, Jerry BlackBird, Oscar Feather, Art and Sondra Feather, Roger IronShield, Violet Fournier, Marcella Lena, Lynette BigTrack, Doris Desjarlais. If we have forgotten a name please know we hold you in our hearts as someone special to Ivan.
Ivan Francis was born on November 7, 1940 at Fort Totten, ND the son of Pete Black Cloud and Clara Belgarde. He attended school at the Little Flower Boarding School in St. Michael. He continued his education at Fort Totten and graduated from Fort Totten High School with the class of 1959. In high school, Ivan was a member of the Fort Totten Braves basketball team that qualified for the State Basketball Tournament three years in the late 1950’s.
Ivan entered the United States Navy at San Diego, California on October 24, 1962. He served his country state side in radio control operations, maintenance and repair. He was honorably discharged on October 24, 1969 with the rank of Radioman Seaman.
After Ivan’s discharge he remained in California and worked in various occupations including working as a police officer in Long Beach, a security guard for a trucking company for over the road truckers and also in telephone repair for the teletype lines in the Long Beach area.
Ivan returned to the Fort Totten area and worked at Sioux Manufacturing for several years. He began working at the casinos, first at the Dakota Sioux Casino in St. Michael, then at Tokio and retired as the Drop Team Supervisor at the Spirit Lake Casino. Ivan was at one time married to Gail Knights.
Ivan was a jack-of-all-trades and used those talents to help family and friends whenever he could. In his spare time, he loved to go to Pow-Wows, play cards and watch sports on TV, especially football and basketball and the sporting event, World Series of Poker. Ivan also proudly served on the VFW Post #6547 Honor Guard Team.
Our lives have been blessed having Ivan here on earth and our hearts will hold his memory forever.
Ivan is survived by his and Gail’s children, Dana Black Cloud, Matthew Black Cloud and Frank (Courtney) Black Cloud; his child with Mary Jane Corrigan, Michelle Olson and children with Ordean IronShield, Tonda (Kevin)IronShield, Tanya (Elijah) Lone Wolf, Claudette (Stewart) YoungBird, Chris IronShield, Matthew IronShield, Samantha IronShield and Tyrone IronShield; forty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; his sisters, Cecelia Jones and Eldora Dauphinais; brother, Greg Feather and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ivan was preceded to the Spirit World by his parents, Pete and Clara; sons, Glenn Black Cloud and Mark Black Cloud; grandson, Louis Black Cloud; sisters, Bernadette McDonald, Cynthia Feather and Twyla Feather; brothers, Bruce Feather and Raymond Feather.
