George R. Swain, 75 of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico entered into rest on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. A Memorial Service for George will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake. George was born in Long Island, New York, March 6, 1935 to Robert Rice Swain and Marjory Bowen Swain. He was raised in Michigan, Florida and New Mexico. He was united in marriage to Margaret Julian on June 26, 1962 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated with a Doctorate of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1964. He was employed for 30 years by Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico doing particle accelerator research. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as clerk of session at the White Rock Presbyterian Church. George was an avid train enthusiast, particularly fond of the history of steam locomotives. He was a 25 year friend of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. He was a loving husband for 49 years, father of five, grandfather of thirteen and foster parent. He retired to Cando, ND later returning to New Mexico to tend to aging in-laws. He has resided in Devils Lake the last several years, with his wife and oldest daughter. George is survived by his wife Margaret; sister Martha “Marty” (Howard) Benham of Texas; children Marjy Swain Hunter of Devils Lake, Marshal Swain of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joyce Swain (Hilman) Benson of Cando, ND, Ken (Samantha) Swain also of Albuquerque and Daniel Swain of Atlanta, Georgia as well as all thirteen grandchildren.
