Marvin Lyle Carter was born February 26, 1947 the son of Lyle and Mildred (Price) Carter at Devils Lake, ND. Marvin attended first grade at Rock Lake School and grades 2-7 in Watford City and Tioga Schools when his dad worked in the oil fields. In the fall of 1959, his family moved west of Cando, ND where Marvin graduated from high school in 1966.
He attended Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake where he met his life companion and wife. Marvin and Joyce (Graff) Carter were married July 16, 1967 in Cando. Marvin attended college in Ellendale and graduated from the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks in June 1970.
His first teaching job was in Glenburn, ND where he started up the Industrial Arts and Football programs. He also taught at Belcourt, Hoople-Valley, and finished his teaching career with 11 years at Four Winds High School.
For the past 21 years, he was self-employed as Carter Construction. This provided Marvin with the opportunity to meet many people in Devils Lake and the surrounding areas. Marvin could always remember a face and what worked he’d done for someone, but a name, not always.
Marvin was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Devils Lake where he served as a trustee and usher. Marvin got great pleasure in teasing people and his loud boisterous laugh was something that made everyone else around him smile. He liked to hunt and enjoyed antique tractors.
His greatest passion was spending time with his family. Playing Candy Land with the grandkids, playing cards and especially attending his grandsons’ football games.
Marvin is survived by his wife Joyce, children, Lisa Townsend, Clearwater, FL; Marc (Jill), Fargo; Susan Taylor (Adam Holden), Grand Forks and five grandchildren, Tanner Williams, Tucker Williams, Elliot Taylor, Ryan Carter and Paige Carter, his brother Roger (Carrian), Amarillo, TX, sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Jim Olson, Dunnellon, FL; father-in-law Erling Graff, Devils Lake along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Darlene, grandson Ross Carter and mother-in-law, Irene Graff.
He will be greatly missed by many. Rest in peace.
