Magdalena “Lena” Marie Richter beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died Friday, February 18 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Rosary and Scripture Service will be held at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake at 7:30P.M.Tuesday, February 22nd. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 10A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her 18 granddaughters. Music will be provided by Stephanie Richter, Rachel Richter and Kady Appelt, vocalists and JoDee Lagein, organist. Magdalena “Lena” Richter was born on the family farm near Midway, McHenry County, N.D. on July 15 1922, to Sebastian and Helen (Miltenberger) Black. She grew-up in the sand-hills of McHenry County attending the one-room schoolhouse. She was united in marriage to Nickolas G. Richter on April 15 1940, at St. Peter and Paul Church of Karlsruhe, North Dakota. Nick and Lena lived in several towns, including Rugby, Sykeston, New Rockford, the family farm by Drake, Devils Lake, then back to the family farm until settling in Devils Lake in 1957. Nick and Lena owned and operated Nick’s Chicken Inn until retiring in 1988. Lena was an active member of the Eagles Auxiliary, serving as State President and was Eagles State Mother of the Year. She was active in St. Joseph’s Church and was a member of St. Jude’s Circle. She was proud to be a member of the VFW and American Legion. She enjoyed being a member of the ladies Bowling League and also singing with the Sweet Adeline’s. She loved to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed reading, embroidering and traveling. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loving to share a jab and a joke. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law Marvin and Clarissa, of Madison WI, Donald and Martha, of Cheyenne WY, Dwayne and Avis, of Valley City, ND, Nicholas and Jenny, of Devils Lake, ND, James and Cheryl, of East Grand Forks, MN, David and Debbie, of Williston, ND and daughter-in-law Jacqueline of Drake. Daughters and sons-in-law Delores and Duane Wilcox, of Devils Lake, ND, Dianne Johnson, of Fargo, ND, Magdlen Richter, of Devils Lake, Melinda and Gerald Karaba, of Grand Forks, ND and Dawn and Randy Appelt, of Martin, ND; her sister Mary Ann Reynolds of California; 30 grand children, 39 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Nick on June 1, 1993, eldest son Kenneth, sisters Rose Edington and Tereasa Vanatta and brothers Frank Black and Peter Black.
