Mathias Paul was born on November 27, 1922 in Seivert Township, rural Calio, ND, one of 11 children born to John and Margaret (Lehnen) Weber. He was reared and educated in the Calio area, attended Severt Township Country School and eventually farmed and raised his family there through the years.
Mathias served with the Civilian Conservation Corp before he entered the United States Army, serving his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1949 with the rank of Private First Class. After his discharge he returned to the Calio area and began his life long career as a farmer. Mathias was united in marriage to Catherine Kueneman on October 14, 1954 at Munich, ND. They farmed together until 1984 when they very unofficially retired from farming moving to Devils Lake in October of 1989. However in those so called retirement years, Mathias worked for an area farmer for several years and rarely missed a week that he and his brother, Leo didn’t return to the farm to work on some particular project such as restoring an old tractor, doing general repair work or driving the countryside enjoying the beauty of nature and checking on the farming operation.
Mathias seemed to be busy from the time he woke in the morning until he went to bed at night. His faith, his family and the farm-all so very important in his life and all blessings in his life.
Mathias was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Calio until it closed and they joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Munich. After moving to Devils Lake he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Seivert Township Board for many years.
Mathias is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Catherine; children and their spouses, Marilyn and Quinn Dalgliesh of Devils Lake, Wanda and Raymond Risser of Jamestown, ND, Kenneth and Linda Weber also of Devils Lake, Lois and Dwight Tohm of Calio, ND and Ione and Keith Knudson of Kulm, ND; sixteen grandchildren, Sheila Dalgliesh and Aaron Dalgliesh; Rachel Risser and Jessica Risser; Kristy (Paul) Wishinsky, Chad (Bobbi Jo) Weber, Nathan (Kristina) Weber, Kelsey Weber; Eric (Tawnee) Tohm, Roxanne (Brad) Erickstad, Dana (Eric) McArthur and Benjamin Tohm; Jarvis Knudson, Julia (Travis) Mathern, Alex Knudson and Tucker Knudson; thirteen great grandchildren; brothers, Leo Weber of Devils Lake, Edmund Weber of Penryn, California and sister, Lena Dibble of Minneapolis, MN; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
