M. Doris Borstad, 87, a lifelong resident of the Lake Region area, Devils Lake, ND beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away surrounded by her family and hospice on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Doris will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Jeff Nicla will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service and Time of Remembrance at 5:30 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Doris will be her grandsons, Paul Williams, Kent Borstad, Dean Borstad, Haakon Zaeske, Mark Williams and Andrew Cowles. Honorary Bearers will be Doris’ granddaughters, Laura Borstad-Dease, Annie Bergrud, Katelin Zaeske, Sara Grosz and Jessica Cowles. Music will be provided by Tim and Jessica Cowles, vocalists and Lynda Pearson, organist. Marie Doris Rype was born on October 2, 1923 in Devils Lake, ND to Kolbjorn “Carl” and Laura (Weed) Rype. Doris attended a rural Ramsey County Elementary school and graduated from Devils Lake High School. She graduated from Minot State Teacher’s College and taught in a one room school house in rural Ramsey County. Doris was united marriage to H. Archie Borstad on August 8, 1943 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. They established their home on the Borstad Farm northwest of Fort Totten. Doris was an active farm wife, raising their family, maintaining their home, sewing, quilting and growing a large flower and vegetable garden. Doris was active in Homemakers Club, St. Olaf Ladies Aid, 4-H Leader, Rebekahs, Lake Region Farmers Union Local, Sons of Norway and was a volunteer for the Lake Region Senior Services. Doris and Archie enjoyed traveling to almost every state including Alaska and Hawaii. The highlight of their travels was a trip to Norway to visit relatives and the birthplace of Doris’ father. Archie died on November 23, 2003. They enjoyed 60 years of married life. After Archie’s death, Doris continued to make Devils Lake her home. She lived for a time at Heartland Court, the Odd Fellows Home and in 2009 moved to the Good Samaritan Center. Doris is survived by her children, Terry Borstad and his wife, Mary of rural Devils Lake, Marie and her husband Rodger Williams of Maddock, ND, Carleen and her husband Tim Cowles of Madison, Alabama and Janet and her husband Dave Zaeske of Fargo, ND; eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; sister Jane Jabs of Devils Lake, several cousins and one niece and several nephews.
