Joseph “Joe” J. Nahinurk Jr., 83 of Devils Lake formerly of Jamestown, ND passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Joe will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Timothy Stout will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Serving as Casket Bearers for Joe will be his sons Larry, Dwight, Lee and Curtis Nahinurk and his grandsons Jeremy and Kerry Nahinurk. Joseph was born on September 2, 1927 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Joseph and Gladys (Emigh) Nahinurk Sr. Joe was reared and educated in the Devils Lake area, attending a one room school on the prairies of North Dakota. Joe entered the United States Army in 1946 and served his country stateside. He was honorably discharged in 1947 and returned to North Dakota. Joe was united in marriage to Helen Ann Pulst on October 27, 1950 at Devils Lake. They established their home on the farm northwest of Devils Lake. This is where they lived, worked and raised their family. Along with the farming, Joe worked as a mechanic for Ed Larson at the Webster Garage. He also put his mechanical skills to work at Schommer-Nash, Lake Supply and Dodge Town. After retiring, Joe and Helen moved to Jamestown, ND for 2 ½ years returning to Devils Lake to live their remaining years. Helen passed away on March 22, 2005. Joe was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and the Eagles Lodge. Joe had many talents and pastimes, but he especially enjoyed playing his harmonica and guitar. He loved to fish and play cards but for the past several years, Joe had really looked forward to meeting his “coffee buddies” at the Cedar Inn each afternoon. He treasured every visit he had with his children, grandchildren and his sisters. We will miss you Joe, our dear Dad, Grandpa, brother and friend. Joe is survived by his children, JoAnn and her husband Mel Brown of Jamestown, Larry Nahinurk and his wife Jeanne of Devils Lake, Dwight Nahinurk and his wife Jan of Bottineau, Lee Nahinurk and his wife Nancy also of Devils Lake and Curtis Nahinurk of Jamestown; daughter-in-law, Wilma Nahinurk also of Jamestown; thirteen grandchildren, Jodi (Matt) Maddock, Amber (Keith) Hoovestol; Jeremy (Kristine) Nahinurk, Kristina (Travis) Kitchens; Angela (Charlie) Kyle, Jessica (Chris) Skjolden; Chad Nahinurk, Kerry (Carol Ann) Nahinurk, Derek (Brittany) Phelps, Gary (Erin) Phelps, Ben Phelps; Ericka Nahinurk and Erin Nahinurk; eleven great grandchildren, Austin, Brooklyn, Avery, Tyson, Preston, Carson, Jackson, Madison, Rain, John and Mikayla; sisters, Helen Erickson and Dorothy Martel of Devils Lake, Doris (Dennis) Toso of Northport, Florida and Lila (Wesley) Pulst of Belle Vista, Arkansas; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen; son Kenneth and brother Bobby Nahinurk.
