Lawrence “Josh” Littleghost Jr., “Maka-uyhun-hun-za” (Shakes the Earth) 59 of the Spirit Lake Nation died on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
A Wake will be held at St. Michael, ND on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday from the Spirit Lake Casino. Mass of Christian burial for Lawrence will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Brian Moen will officiate and Lawrence will be laid to rest in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Lawrence will be Terrance Ross, Lawrence “Larry” Littleghost III, Terrance Ross Jr., Mark Littleghost, Reno Littleghost, Maurice Gipson and Louis Chaske.
Honorary Bearers for Lawrence will be David Seaboy, Danny Seaboy, Dayton Seaboy, the Whiteshield family, Violet “Littleghost” Blueshield and family, Rose “Littleghost” Dubois and family, Ephriam Hill and family, MaryJane ”Littleghost” Yankton and family, Phillip ”Skip” Longie and family, Ambrose ”Buddy” Longie and family, Marilyn Littleghost, John and Marva ”Littleghost” Tollefson, Libby ”Waanatan” Littleghost, Helena ”Waanatan” Littleghost, Roberta Littleghost, Janette Herald, Theresa Herald, Vincent and Virgil Herald, his many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, Jeanie Chaske, Robert OldRock, Carol and Kermit WalkingEagle, Carla Kristopherson, Joe Brown, Reynaldo Torres, Corrine Brown, Ella Lafrombois, Sheila and Luella Thompson. Lawrence was born on October 19, 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio the son of Lawrence and Geraldine (Young) Littleghost Sr. He attended school at Little Flower and Wahpeton Boarding School. He worked for Sioux Manufacturing in Fort Totten ND, Four Winds High School in Fort Totten ND, and the Elderly Meals Program in St. Michael, ND. He lived his life on the Spirit Lake Nation reservation. He enjoyed hunting until he was no longer able and passed this skill to his sons. He enjoyed driving through the reservation enjoying the scenery. He also was an avid movie viewer and collected many DVD’s to view at his leisure. He enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives. Lawrence was well known for his quick wit and humor; he could bring laughter to any room, no matter the situation. He is loved by the Littleghost family.
Lawrence is survived by his wife and life partner Carole J. Whiteshield-Littleghost of St. Michael, ND; son Terrance (Remy) Ross also of St. Michael, ND; daughter, Crystal Littleghost also of St. Michael, ND; son, Christopher Whiteshield, St. Michael; son, Cheyenne Littleghost of Fargo, ND; daughter, Angie (Filmore) Whiteshield of Oglala, SD; son, Josh (Jenny) Littleghost of Fort Totten, ND; son, Lawrence “Larry” (Lenore) Littleghost III of Sisseton, SD; daughter, Ladeen Littleghost of Grafton, ND; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters and brother, Noreen Littleghost, Jeaneen Littleghost, Karen Littleghost, Loren Littleghost. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Geraldine; daughter, Geraldine Ross Olson; son, Lucas Littleghost; grandparents, James and Mary Agnes (Feather) Littleghost, John Young and Lena Goodhouse; grandfathers, BlackEagle, Heinkpaduta, George Littleghost; grandmothers, Theresa Iron Lightning, Violet Littleghost BlueShield, Rose Littleghost Dubois, Mary Jane Littleghost Yankton; uncles Francis Littleghost, Eugene Littleghost, Jordan Littleghost; aunt, Melinda Littleghost Thompson; sisters, Wanda Littleghost Gonzalez and LuAnne Littleghost; brother Brian Stacey Littleghost; Christopher Whiteshield’s mother, Tina Whiteshield and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
