Verdyne Marie, the daughter of Victor and Palma (Stafslien) Jensen was born on June 4, 1933 on the family farm “Gryta” in Sheridan County, rural Anamoose, North Dakota. She was reared and educated in the Anamoose area, attending Lincoln Valley Country School and graduating from Anamoose High School. After high school, Verdyne worked for the telephone company in Harvey, ND.
Verdyne was united in marriage to John F. Ziegler Jr. on October 27, 1952 at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Harvey where they made their home for three years. In 1955 they moved to Devils Lake (Lakewood Park) where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years and where Verdyne lived until the time of her death. While living in Devils Lake, Dyne worked a variety of jobs including several years with the telephone company and the Devils Lake Journal. But for Verdyne her most important job was caring for her husband and children and she dedicated herself to that job. Dyne was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pioneer Daughters, VFW Auxiliary, served on the St. Mary’s Academy School Board and volunteered at the Senior Citizen Center.
Verdyne was always busy with hobbies and activities in the community. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers and sewing for her children and grandchildren. She was a quilter and made quilts for each member of her family and more. She was an excellent cook and baker and in earlier years she made and decorated many celebration cakes including wedding cakes. Verdyne was a genealogy and history buff. She researched the family history before the age of the computer and this involved many hours of research in books and even travel to different states. She was especially proud of her Scandinavian heritage and as a member of the Sons of Norway she was able to bring that heritage to life through many activities and baking with her friend Marilyn Pederson. The highlight of researching her heritage was two trips to her ancestral home of Denmark. She had a large collection of photos of many of her ancestors from several generations and generously shared them with family and friends. She was also the go-to person for any history regarding Lakewood Park. Verdyne loved life, loved her friends and loved her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the most precious jewels in her life.
Verdyne is survived by her children, Jon (Trish O’Meara) Ziegler of Minneapolis, MN, Kara (Thomas) Heustis of Bismarck, Vee Anne Erickstad of Cando, ND and Jay (Sue Smith) of LaPorte, Colorado; seven grandchildren Jason (Dianna) Heustis, Karl (Jenny) Heustis, Weston (Tanya) Heustis; Mandy (Chris) Hagel; Doug Erickstad, Brad (Roxanne) Erickstad and Lisa (Aaron) Peyerl; ten great grandchildren Mason, Kain and Halley Heustis, Mya and Kyla Heustis, Anne and Ellie Convey, Alec Peyerl, Olivia Erickstad and Hailey Hagel.
Dyne was preceded in death by her parents; husband John on March 30, 1999; brothers Duane Jensen and Dennis Jensen.
Memorials may be directed to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND or St. Joseph’s Grade School in Devils Lake.
