Mary was the daughter of Marlo TwoHearts and the late Patricia “Cissy” BigTrack. She was raised by her grandparents, Cornelius Kirk and the late Marla Rose Kirk. As a young child she attended Little Hoop Head Start. She then attended Four Winds High School where she was very active in sports. While in the 8th grade, she was the youngest Lady Indian on the varsity A Squad making 3 pointers.
Mary attended the Rough Rider High School in Grand Forks, ND. She also attended the Quentin Burdick Job Corp in Minot, ND where she earned her High School Diploma and CNA Certificate. And she met the love of her life, Marko Rout. Mary and Marko were united in marriage shortly after and had three precious children, Amariona, Nyajimma and Luka. The family moved to Fargo, ND where they resided for two years. They moved to Grand Forks where they worked and volunteered at the Gospel Out Reach Church. Marko and Mary divorced in 2010.
Mary was very athletic throughout her life. She participated in rodeos, calf and steer riding, barrel racing-winning several buckles. When Mary was on the PowWow Trail, she danced Jingle Dress. Mary spent many hours on the basketball courts and the baseball diamonds, showing off her mad skills. She was even in cross country. Mary was a true cowgirl; she loved riding horseback and being around animals. As she was nearing the end of her earthly journey, she enjoyed long phone conversations with family and friends and long walks appreciating Mother Earth.
