Ethel Mae Haugen, 79 of Lakota formerly of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Lakota Good Samaritan Center, Lakota, ND.
Funeral Services for Ethel will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Rafe Allison will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Friday at the church from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
Ethel Mae, daughter of Tony and Mabel (Storkson) Asleson was born on April 8, 1932 at Larimore ND. She grew up and attended school in Lakota, graduating from Lakota High School with the class of 1951.
Ethel was united in marriage to Leo Haugen on November 19, 1955 at Devils Lake where they also established their home, living, working and raising their family. Ethel worked as a waitress at the Lakeside Café and Great Northern Café. She then was employed with Marv and Leo’s Red Owl and at Leever’s County Market.
Leo passed away on March 20, 1980. Ethel continued to call Devils Lake home but did live in Alexandria, MN for a time to be closer to her sister Dixie, then moved to Grand Forks when she had to undergo knee replacement surgery. She eventually returned to Devils Lake making it her home until February of 2005 when she moved to the Lakota Good Samaritan Center.
As a young widow, Ethel devoted herself to her family and extended family, always enjoying spending time in Angus, Minnesota with Leo’s family. She was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed cross-stitch and crocheting. She generously gave her special creations away to family and friends. She was a trophy winning bowler with the Mohawk Bowling League and a member of Peace Lutheran Church. When spending time at home she was an avid reader, especially of Louis L’Amour books, watching Lawrence Welk and listening to Danny O’Donnell.
Ethel, our precious mother and grandmother, sister and aunt, our earthly treasure.
Ethel is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Kelli and Leo Eback of Virginia MN, Penny Haugen and Bruce WalkingEagle of Fort Totten ND, Dixie and Steve Kappes of Fargo ND; sons and daughter-in-law Tony Haugen and Myron and Jeannette Asleson all of Devils Lake; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; sister and brothers: Dixie Wagner, Michigan ND, Wes (Vivian) Asleson, Melvin “Doug” Asleson, Edward (Eloise) Forde all of Devils Lake and Richard (Sharon) Forde, Parshall CO; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo and son Michael.
