VERA M GRAY-MONDRY

Vera M. Gray-Mondry, 96 of Devils Lake formerly of Hampden ND and Crookston, MN passed away on Wednesday evening, November 2, 2011 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake in the loving care of family. Services for Vera will be held on Saturday, May 12th, 2012 at the Storlie Cemetery, rural Hampden. Vera May was born on May 10, 1915 in Devils Lake the daughter of Charles and Viola (Strong) Johnson. She grew up and was educated in the Hampden area, graduating from Hampden High School. She continued her education at the Deaconess School of Nursing in Grand Forks, graduating as a Registered Nurse. While living in Devils Lake, Vera worked for Dr. Toomey. Vera married Robert C. Gray of Devils Lake in 1936. In 1948, Vera and her family moved to Crookston MN where she continued her nursing career. On April 4, 1960 Vera married R.S. Mondry. After their marriage, they established their home in Minto ND where they shared eighteen wonderful years together. R.S. “Dick” passed away in 1978. Vera then moved to Grand Forks and in 2000 she moved to the family farm at rural Devils Lake to live with her son, Bob Gray until her death. Vera loved to garden, especially enjoying her flower gardens and favorite flower, the iris. She was an extremely talented knitter and created many beautiful afghans and sweaters to give to family and friends. In her younger years, Vera enjoyed the game of golf, riding bike and anything outdoors in the beauty of nature. Vera was a vivacious, outgoing, friendly, people loving person. She was always interested in the lives of friends and family and what better way to get to know someone than on the dance floor. Vera loved to dance and dancing partners came in all different sizes and ages. We shall miss this courageous, faith filled, loving and kind woman. May she rest in God’s peace. Vera is survived by her sons Robert “Bob” Gray of Devils Lake and Gerald “Jerry” (Judy) Gray of Winsted MN; grandchildren Gerald Allen Gray, Melbourne AK, Katherine Marie Gray, Joplin MO, Jill (Bill) Gundlach, Burnsville MN, David (Lynn) Gray, Minneapolis and Kelly (Jim) McIntyre and five great grandchildren; step children Lavern (Jim) Mahar-Costello, Voss ND, Harold (Joan) Mondry, Minto ND, Richard (Darlene) Mondry, Lake George MN, Laurel (Jim) Cruse, Columbia MO, Loraine (Conrad) Dvorak, Quincy IL and Diane Mondry-Bass, Lompoc CA; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Robert C. Gray and R.S.”Dick” Mondry and brother and sister-in-law Arthur “Bud” and Myrtle Johnson.
