Bert W. Schall, 87 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Sunday evening, December 4, 2011 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake with family at his side. Funeral Services for Bert will be held on Wednesday morning, December 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The Rosary and Scripture Service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for Bert will be his nephews David Schall, Bennie Fossen, Ray Bertsch, Ronald Holler, Michael Schall, Jason Schall and Paul Schall. Reading the Scriptures will be Rosemary Mathern and Gift Bearers will be Agnes Kraft and Bernie Ehnert. Bert was born on May 14, 1924 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake, ND son of John and Caroline (Miller) Schall. He was raised on a farm in Noonan Township and attended Crary School. Bert joined the United States Army in 1948 and took his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then sent to Camp Truscott, Austria, and Germany, where he took his surgical technician training. He then went to Fort Carson, Colorado where he worked in the United States Army Hospital for 4 years. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class Surgical Technician and retired from the United States Army in 1957. After retirement from the Army, Bert was employed at Mercy Hospital for 40 years in surgery. Bert was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Bert is survived by his six sisters Barbara Dodgson and Annie Holler both of Devils Lake, Katie Reynen of Oklahoma, Veronica Leiphon also of Devils Lake, Eleanor Jacobs of California and Esther Mason of Utah and a special friend, Florence Halloway, Cando and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Bert in death are his parents John and Caroline; four brothers Lawrence, Frank, Jack and Wendell Schall; two sisters Lena Bertsch and Rosie Fossen.
