Marvin C. Martinson, 83 of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Hampden, passed away on February 11, 2012. Funeral Services for Marvin will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Hampden, ND with Pastor Jodi Myrvik officiating. Burial will be in the Storlie Cemetery, rural Hampden. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service and Time of Remembrance at 6:00 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Marvin will be his grandsons and Honorary Bearers will be his granddaughters. Music by High Plains Trio recordings and John Martinson as organist for the service. The son of Clarence and Mildred (Berntson) Martinson, Marvin was born on September 17, 1928, on the family farm south of Hampden. He was baptized at Derrick Lutheran Church, Derrick, ND and confirmed at Zoar Lutheran Church in Hampden. Marvin was educated at Victoria School, rural Hampden, until the age of 14. At that time his father became ill, and Marvin began farming. He continued to farm until the age of 80. Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Schonauer on October 31, 1948 at the farm of Doris’ parents. Together they raised six children. Marvin and Doris spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, for nearly thirty years. Marvin was active in the Hampden area, serving on the boards at the Hampden School, Banner Township and Hampden Elevator. He was also a member of the Devils Lake Elks, Eagles and Odd Fellows Lodges and the Hampden Commercial Club and Mall Association. Marvin is survived by his wife Doris and children Barbara (Richard) Lunde, Grand Forks; Claire (Brent) Evans, Grand Forks; Richard (Cheryl) Martinson, Munich; Diane Blue, Grand Forks; Lavonne (Jay) Liversage, Denver, CO; and Larry (Lynn) Martinson also of Denver. Marvin was lovingly known as “The Chief” by his grandchildren Jason Skaar, Jeff Skaar, Chad Lunde, Amy (Lunde) Swanson, Jo (Skaar) Sannes, Patrick Martinson, Casey Blue, Todd Lunde, Julie Martinson, Heather Kosobud, Bridget Martinson, Logan Martinson and step-grandchildren Sean Evans and Richard Evans. There are fifteen great grandchildren. Other survivors include Marvin’s brother Pete Martinson, sisters Marilyn (Vernald) Stotts and Donna (Richard) Karel and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, sister Clarice Martinson, brothers-in-law Alvin Peters and Vern Schonauer and sister-in-law Sharon Martinson. Marvin’s family would like to say a very special thank you to the staff at Mercy Hospital who cared for him with love and compassion. Marvin had a great respect and confidence in his “rocks” Doctors Bharath, Denchev and Lee, Shelly Schnieder and Marilyn Johnson. For their continued care throughout the years, the family is extremely grateful. Marvin and his family also appreciated the staff at the Care for Solutions in Cando for providing incredible support and friendship during Marvin’s rehab. Marvin will be remembered for his kindness, caring and always putting others first.
