Roland D. Nygaard, of Devils Lake formerly of Starkweather, ND passed away on Friday morning, February 24, 2012 at his home in the loving care of his family and Mercy Hospice.
Funeral Services for Roland will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Robert Buechler, Pastor of Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Church, Starkweather, ND officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Cemetery in the spring. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Serving as Honorary Bearers for Roland will be all the friends of Bill W. and special urn bearer will be Eric Woodard.
Roland Dale Alfred, son of Christian Orlando and Laverne (Kielen) Nygaard was born on December 2, 1939 at Edinburg, ND. At a young age the family moved to Breckenridge, Minnesota where Roland grew up and was educated, graduating from Breckenridge High School. He continued his education at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Roland entered the United States Army in August of 1957 and served his country, receiving an honorable discharge in August of 1962. After his discharge, Roland worked for several years in Kentucky as a supervisor with the Department of Agriculture. Roland was at one time married to Georgine Holland.
In 1972, Roland was united in marriage to Judy Gjevre at Fargo. They established their home in Lisbon, ND and were the owners and operators of R & J Lounge for ten years. Roland also worked at obtaining his Master’s Degree in Education and Addiction Counseling. In the early 1980’s, the family moved to Devils Lake and Roland began a 21 year career with Lake Region Human Services as an addiction counselor, retiring in 2008.
Roland was a member of Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Church and the North Dakota Addiction Counseling Association and also served on their Board.
Roland was a strong believer in education and hard work and was a great example of both. When he did take time to relax he especially enjoyed fishing-both summer and winter and hunting with family and friends. When he was being “grandpa” he loved playing with his grandchildren.
Roland is survived by his loving family. His wife, Judy; children Brian (Rhonda) Nygaard of Oil City, Louisiana, Mark (Naomi) Nygaard, Dickinson, ND, Eric (Wanda) Nygaard, Mayville, ND, Kari (Mark) Durbin, Helena, Montana, Cathy Nygaard, Dallas, Texas, Christopher (Sue) Nygaard and Charles Nygaard also of Dallas; eighteen grandchildren, Ashley, Alexandra, Joshua, Braden, Breanne and Brooke; Seaira and Saige; Brady and Jada; Kayla, Justin and Heather; Xander, Arcadia and Carinthia; Danielle and Jessica; brothers and sister Eugene (Karen) Nygaard, Dallas, Texas, Michael (Rita) Nygaard, Fargo, ND, Leland (Jean) Nygaard, Moorhead, Minnesota, Clarence David “CD” (Ann) Nygaard, Phoenix, Arizona and Patricia (Todd) Johnson of Utah; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents.
