HYLLIS McDANIEL

Hyllis F. Johnson McDaniel passed away peacefully at Heartland Care Center on April 23, 2012. She was 91 years old. Hyllis, the daughter of Herman and Hildur (Lund) Johnson, was born on July 30, 1920 in Glenfield, North Dakota. She attended school in Glenfield and then attended the New York Hairstyling Academy in Fargo. She worked as a beauty operator in Cooperstown, ND until February of 1943 when she traveled to Portland, OR to marry her high school sweetheart, Ray McDaniel. They were united in marriage on February 19, 1943 in Portland. After six years in Portland, Hyllis and Ray returned to Glenfield where they had a small business while Ray went back to college. The couple and their two children moved to Grace City in 1956, and then in 1959 the family moved to Devils Lake where she resided until her passing. Hyllis was a devoted member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for many years and was active in the ALCW and WELCA. She was a member of the Devils Lake Women’s Club and the Swedish Club. Additionally, she was an enthusiastic supporter of Devils Lake sports and an avid card player. But aside from these associations and activities, Hyllis’ primary focus was always her family. She is survived by her children, Scott McDaniel (Ellen Cornwell) of Billings, MT, and Mary McDaniel of Seattle, WA, a sister Betty Johnson of Glenfield, ND, one sister-in-law, Evalyn (Mrs. Wilmar) Johnson of Jamestown, ND and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Ray on December 13, 2006; her parents; three brothers, Francis Johnson, LeRoy Johnson and Wilmar Johnson and three sisters Elsie Johnson, Margaret Johnson-McDaniel and Leone Johnson-Johnson. Memorials can be made to the Ray and Hyllis McDaniel Scholarship Fund at Devils Lake High School. Funeral Services for Hyllis will be held on Friday, April 27th, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Reuben Schnaidt will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
