Nannette attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated from Devils Lake Central in 1973. She graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice from Minot State College in 1978. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Nannette enthusiastically accepted a position as a patrol officer with the Devils Lake Police Department in 1980. She dedicated her professional life as a servant to the people of Devils Lake. She enjoyed being an instructor in the Police Officer Training Program at Lake Region Junior College. She retired as Captain of the Devils Lake Police Department in 2008. Her adjustment to retirement was short lived. Her brother Rick had just been diagnosed with cancer. She moved to Mora, Minnesota to care for him and help him with the care of his two children Patrick and Niki. Upon his death Nannette brought his children home to Devils Lake and quietly began the adventure of nurturing and raising another family. Nannette’s passions in life were her hobby farm and her circle of friends. She raised quarter horses, loved gardening and making hay. She delighted in being the “favorite” aunt to her nieces and nephews; taking them fishing at the “honey hole”, horseback riding, hunting and into her garden. Nannette lived her life as a peacemaker and servant. She did not strive to make her presence noticed, yet her presence brought with it order and hope. Captain Martin’s persona brought respect, commanded authority and was undergirded with an immense depth of compassion. Her absence will be greatly felt.
