Rose M. Gulseth, 94 a long time resident of the Lake Region area passed away on Sunday morning, May 27, 2012 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial for Rose will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake at a later date. Casket Bearers will be Rose’s grandsons Lon LaFrance, Dane LaFrance, Troy LaFrance, Ryan LaFrance and Jay Gulseth and nephew Lanny Gulseth. Honorary Bearers will be Rose’s Great Grandchildren. Reading the Scriptures will be Shary Johnson and Gift Bearers will be Isabelle, John and Elliot LaFrance. Music will be provided by Patty Cote. Rose Marie, daughter of Ferdinand and Mathilda (Peters) Duft was born on February 12, 1918 on the homestead east of Starkweather, ND. She was baptized and confirmed in the Assumption of Mary Catholic Church in Starkweather and attended school in Sullivan Township. Rose was one of six children born to the Duft’s. They never knew a grandmother or grandfather as their parents both came from Switzerland. Their parents met in Devils Lake and were the very first couple to be married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church the year it was built in 1908. Rose worked for several families in the Lake Region area and also the Sisters of Mercy Hospital. On December 26, 1937 she was united in marriage to Howard T. Gulseth at Assumption church in Starkweather. After their marriage they moved to a farm Northeast of Devils Lake where they farmed for thirty years and raised their family. Rose loved the farm and doing farm chores and gardening. In 1966, they moved to Devils Lake and Rose worked as a nurses’ aide in Pediatrics at Mercy Hospital for a number of years. She loved taking care of children. Rose also managed Gulseth’s Trailer Court and she and Howard were owners and operators of Pop’s for many years. They retired in 1980 and in their retirement years, they loved traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren in Phoenix, Wyoming and Missouri. Howard died on June 27, 2005. Rose was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Jude’s Circle and the Legion of Mary. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Eagles Auxiliary for over 56 years. Rose is survived by her children and their spouses, Ronald and Teresa Gulseth of Phoenix, Arizona, Richard and Lois Gulseth of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Carol and Ernie LaFrance of Lake Ozark, Missouri; grandchildren, Lon LaFrance, Dane (Kate) LaFrance, Troy (Anga) LaFrance, Ryan (Kate) LaFrance, Jay Gulseth, Julie (Jeff) Ackerson, Lance Gulseth and Lori (Richard) Jackson; great grandchildren Brett, Colin, Nathan and Alex LaFrance, Pari and Kalli LaFrance, Erin Gulseth, Isabelle, John and Elliot LaFrance, Danielle Rose (Justin) LaFrance-Crosby and Jarett and Jalissa Rose Ackerson; sisters Hermena Larson of Devils Lake and Cecelia Benson of Portland, Oregon and several nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; brother and sister-in-law, Verner and Thelma Duft; sisters and brothers-in-law, Leonarda “Dodie”and Wendel Adams; Mathilda “Tillie” and Edward Larson, Melvin Larson and Edward “Spud” Benson.
