FRANK D. HORNSTEIN

Frank D. Hornstein, 85, Devils Lake formerly of Crary, ND passed away early Thursday morning, June 14, 2012 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake with loving family at his side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with burial in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 8:00 p.m. The Rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Frank Daniel Hornstein, son of Joseph and Carolina (Vetsch) Hornstein was born on April 10, 1927 at Rugby, ND. He was reared on the family farm northeast of Rugby. He attended a country school in Pierce County. He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the United States Army on March 27, 1951, serving his country during the Korean War. He received his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. While home on leave, Frank married his sweetheart, Mila Peterson on December 27, 1951 at Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby. Frank returned to Texas and was eventually stationed in Japan and served with the 19th Infantry Regiment and Signal Corp. Frank was honorably discharged from active duty on March 7, 1953 and served with the United States Army Reserve for 5 years. When returning to North Dakota, Frank and Mila worked on the family farm with Frank’s brother for 9 months. Then they ventured out on their own and in October of 1953 they purchased a farm northeast of Crary. They farmed, ranched and raised their family here for the next 38 years. Frank also drove school bus for Crary Public School for over 24 years until it closed in 1996. In 1991, Frank and Mila moved to Devils Lake but Frank in no way retired. He continued to help his son on the farm and for several years they worked as bus drivers together too. Frank was a member, served as an usher and trustee and sang in the choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Crary until it closed and they became members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake and served as Eucharistic Ministers. Frank served on the Stevens Township Board and with the Crary Rural Fire Department for many years. He was also a member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus. Frank’s life revolved around his faith, his family and the farm. He loved fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was very involved in the lives of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and keeping up to date with all of their activities. He also enjoyed the companionship of his favorite dog, Rocky, a Husky he trained as a pup. We shall miss you always and hold your memory in our hearts forever. Frank is survived by Mila, his wife of 60 years; his children and their spouses, Karen and Dave Senger, of Minnetonka, MN, Linda Taylor of Grundy Center, Iowa, Kelly and Loree Hornstein of Fargo, ND, Brenda and Todd Christie of Wahpeton, ND and Todd and Denise Hornstein of Crary; eleven grandchildren, Andrea and Christopher Senger-Aimee (Jim) Wolfe, Jessica Schmaltz and Abby Taylor-Amber (Jens) Stokke and Jason (Andrea) Hornstein-Jordan and Jared Christie-Alyssa and Joseph Hornstein; six great grandchildren, Lily and Logan Stokke, Emma and Easton Hornstein, Landon and Teagan Wolfe; sisters, Anne Gebhardt of Nine Falls, WA, Barbara (John) Stoll of Loogootee, Indiana and Alice Myrum of Devils Lake; brother Paul Hornstein of Colorado and many nieces and nephews and their families. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Peter Hornstein; sisters, Mary Hoffart, Katherine Hamers, Theresa Schaan and Josephine Hornstein. Serving as Casket Bearers for Frank will be his grandsons, Jens Stokke, Jason Hornstein, Jordan Christie, Jared Christie, Christopher Senger and Joseph Hornstein and Honorary Bearers will be Frank’s granddaughters and great grandchildren. Reading the Scriptures will be Dave Senger and Gift Bearers will be Paul Hornstein, Elvina Schaan and Barbara Stoll.
