Our precious Dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, cousin and husband, Walter George Cavanaugh “Porgie” left us to go walk with the Great Spirit on Monday, August 6, 2012. He passed away at the age of 64 years. Porgie was a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake for 11 months. He wanted to come home so badly and was so lonesome the last few weeks. So for that reason we will bring him home on Saturday, August 11, 2012 to lay in his room and on Sunday, August 12th a Wake will be held at the Fort Totten Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Services will also be held at the Fort Totten Recreation Center on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Walter will be laid to rest in the Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Fort Totten. The procession to Porgie and Sally’s home will leave from the Spirit Lake Marina on Saturday at 12:00 noon and the Family Wake will begin at 1:00 p.m. A procession from Sally’s home to the Fort Totten Recreation Center on Sunday will leave at 4:00 p.m. Walter George Cavanaugh was born on January 27th, 1948 to Lillian Redday and Thomas Cavanaugh. He was raised in the St. Michael area. Porgie was a good singer and enjoyed going to pow-wows. He enjoyed being around his grandkids and would get a laugh out of things they would do. He loved to do arts and crafts when he was still able to. He made many items and would give them away. Porgie loved company. He planted many trees and flowers for people because he had a green thumb. Porgie went to school at Wahpeton, Fort Totten and Warwick. He worked at various jobs, including Dakota Tribal Industries and Sioux Manufacturing Corp. Porgie is survived by his wife of 33 years Sally Cavanaugh; his four children Travis Littleghost and his children Tyson Sherman and John Littleghost, Charlene Cavanaugh and her children, Trevor, Carlito, Chantell, Kassandra and Charissa, Melissa TwoHearts and her children and Walter (Tioga) Cavanaugh and his children Eliza, Olivia, Tamya, Tariah, Veronica and Zane; sister Lillian (Andy) DeMarce and her children Andy Jr., Marlin, Marshall and Preston DeMarce. Porgie also raised his stepson, Roger Alberts as his own since Roger was 5 years old. Other survivors include Hunka daughter, Ann Scott; Hunka sisters, Peggy Cavanaugh, Catherine Howard, Faye Jetty, Jean Cavanaugh and Darlis Longie; Hunka brothers, Terry Herman, Billy Dean Cavanaugh and Greg Cavanaugh; also many nieces, nephews, cousins along with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Porgie always said all family members meant a lot to him, but he did have his specials; special granddaughters, Eliza Cavanaugh, Vanessa Charboneau and Krista White; special grandson, Trevor Cavanaugh; special nieces, Leola, Alvina, Willy Jo and Maureen, Babes, Adele and Pansey. Special Thanks to employees of Good Sam and also to Leola and her kids, Jody, Chuck, Jon and Kami; also Alvina and kids, Crystal, Kathy, Krista, Denise, Kris, Elmer and Kristy; also Willy Jo and kids, Mary and Jeff and Napoleon; also Sarah and Dennis, Joyelle, Kyann, Vanessa and Frankie for always being there for him especially visiting him. They brought him lots of happiness and joy. Porgie will be greatly missed and always in our hearts by all who knew him-especially family. If we forgot to mention anybody it was not intentional. Porgie was preceded in death by his grandparents Walter and Alice Cavanaugh; parents Lillian and Thomas Cavanaugh; brother James Cavanaugh and sisters Shirley Johnson, Olivia Cavanaugh, Delima Jackson and Velma BigTrack. First Pallbearers for Porgie will be Terry Herman, Bob St. Pierre, Dennis Chaske, Jon White, Marcus Lambert, Joe Lancelotta, Myron Lambert, Ron McKay Sr., Allen Alberts and Perry Fassett. Second Pallbearers for Porgie will be Trevor Cavanaugh, Tyson Sherman, Clark Baker, John Littleghost, Pernell Cavanaugh, Vanessa Charboneau, Richard Cavanaugh and Kristy White. Honorary Bearers will be Ron and Brooke, Rochelle and Jeff Cavanaugh, Kathy and James Yankton, Bob Charboneau and Alfreda Dunn, Bob Greywater, Buddy Alberts, Casper Demarrias, Imogene Belgarde and family, Wendy Yankton, Penny Yankton, Elita Yankton, Haley Yankton, Iris Yankton, Angie Leaf, Joe Yankton, Sky Yankton, J.C. Yankton, Raymond Jetty Sr., Michael Cavanaugh Jr., Perry Halsey, Roger Cavanaugh, Herbert Cavanaugh, Alfred Taylor, Frankie Chaske, Hermenia McKay, Catalina Herman, Bibbs and Beryl Dubois, Ashley and Curly Fournier, Tony and Vina McDonald, Virginia Lancelotta, Winona Fox, Lavonne Fox and family, Lenore WhiteLightning and family, Linda Fox and family, Leonard Fox and family, Jr. Fox and family, LaDonna and Leann Fox and family and Lee Fox and family and special good friend, Sharon Thomas and family and all employees of the Good Sam and all of Porgie’ s relatives from Canada.
