Glenn H. Soper, 80 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday morning, August 9, 2012 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Glenn will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Jeff Nicla officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday, August 17th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Honorary Bearers are all of Glenn’s many dear friends and family. Glenn Harrison Soper, son of Audry E. and Alma (Malingen) Soper was born on March 13, 1932 at Devils Lake, ND. He was reared and educated in Devils Lake, graduating from Central High School in the class of 1950. He attended Lake Region Junior College for one year. Glenn was drafted into the United States Army in April of 1952 during the Korean Conflict and served at Fort Knox, Kentucky with the 3rd Armored Division. Glenn was united in marriage to Betty A Ringstrom at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on December 23, 1952. After he was honorably discharged in 1954, they lived at Newbre School where Betty taught for three years. When she began teaching at Webster, ND, they moved to Devils Lake where they lived and raised their family. He worked for his Dad and Soper Construction in several aspects of the road construction business. In 1954 Glenn, Roger, Byron and Vernell began operating the Exxon Service Station at 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street. In the late 1960’s, the Soper Brothers purchased the Exxon Station at 4th Street and 6th Avenue and the Humble Oil Company. In 1963, the brothers began another enterprise, Soper Brothers’ Construction, again involved in all aspects of road construction in the area. In the early 1990’s the business was sold. Glenn then worked for Ramsey County as a blade man for 7 years until he retired. Glenn was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Elks Lodge, the American Legion and the Town and Country Club. He was an honorary Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks for all his hard work for the organization. He was also a State Elk of the Year. His favorite pastime was golfing and he won many golf tournaments in the area and at the Town and Country Club. Glenn’s survivors are his wife of almost 60 years, Betty; sons Charles Soper of Denver, Colorado, Brian Soper of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Christopher Soper of Lenexa, Kansas; brothers Vernell Soper of Devils Lake and Jay Soper and his wife Carole of Sun City Grand, Arizona; sisters-in-law Shirley and her husband Bash Lacher of Bismarck, ND, Mae Soper and Alyce Soper both of Devils Lake; many nephews and nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Donald, Byron and Roger.
