Vincent Raymond Sherman “Heh Aka Hoksina” (Elk Boy) our beloved Father, Father-in-law, Great Grandpa, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and Cousin entered into the Spirit World on August 27, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND following a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fort Totten. Fr. Charles Leute OP will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Jerome’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Fort Totten. A Wake Service will begin at 5:00 p.m., Monday, September 3rd at the Fort Totten Recreation Center with a Rosary Service at 8:00 p.m. Vincent Raymond Sherman was born on January 28, 1933, in Fort Totten, ND the son of Benedict and Rosalie (Baer) Sherman. He went to school at the Fort Totten Calvary Square then later attended the Little Flower Mission School in St. Michael, ND. Vincent worked for several farmers in the area doing various jobs and he also worked for the Fort Totten Maintenance Housing Program. Raymond was united in marriage to Olivia Marie Feather Lawrence on March 11th, 1950 and throughout their marriage seven children were born-Joseph Sherman Sr., Mary Ellen Sherman, Colleen Sherman, Iris Sherman and Merval Sherman. Olivia passed onto the Spirit World in 1959. Raymond later met the love of his life, Rosemary “Bess” LittleWind in 1965. Throughout their 35 years together, they had three loving children-David Sherman Sr., Rayone Sherman and LaVern “Bundy” LIttlewind Sr. Rosemary left to the Spirit World on October 13th, 1999. For pastime hobbies, Raymond enjoyed playing moccasin hand games, shooting pool, traveling to pow-wows, playing Bingo, playing rummy and solitaire and filling out crossword puzzles. He was also a very skilled leather craftsman. Raymond enjoyed doing yard work, spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. He taught them about the Catholic Religion. When at home he could be found in his room reading the Bible or heard saying the Rosary prayers. He enjoyed attending Sunday Mass until his illness progressed, keeping him at home. Raymond was a fluent Dakota Speaker and he loved to teach his grandchildren about the Dakota Language. He taught and enjoyed listening to Baby David “DJ” and his son LaVern “Bundy”, singing Indian songs. Raymond loved to pitch horseshoes in his younger years. He also enjoyed traveling with his son, David Sr. to all horseshoe tournaments and would become very happy when his son, David Sr. would win 1st place. Vincent Raymond is survived by his beloved family. Sons: Joseph (Elaine) Sherman Sr., Merval (Audrey) Sherman, David (Rose) Sherman Sr., LaVern “Bundy” (Fran) Littlewind Sr. and Tyson (Stephanie) Sherman Sr.; Daughter: His Susie Q Rayone “Cissy” Sherman; Special Grandchildren: Felicia (Justin) Sherman, Davin “Boss” Sherman, David Sherman Jr., LJ Littlewind, Dylan Littlewind, Gabriel Smith III, Jerome Littlewind, Raeleigh Littlewind, Rose Marie Sherman and Rae Onna Sherman; Twenty Five Grandchildren and Twenty Four Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Irene Littlewind and Cora Rose Iceman; Godchild: Florestine Peltier; Cousins: Stella and Sol Sherman; Many nieces, many nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benedict and Rosalie; paternal grandparents, Joseph Sherman and Alice Iawastewin; maternal grandparents, Benedict Baer and Adelle Langer; son, Calvin Sherman; daughters, Iris Sherman, Mary Ellen Sherman, Colleen Sherman and Meredith Sherman; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Sherman Dubois, Sara Leftbear and Rachel TwoHearts; brothers, Harry Hopkins Sr., Benedict Sherman Jr. and Joseph Sherman. Serving as Pallbearers for Raymond will be Dylan Blake Littlewind, Roy LoneBear, Joseph Sherman Jr., Andrew Sherman, Zitkana Maza OldRock, Francisco “Paco” de la Paz, David Sherman Jr., LaVern Littlewind Jr. and Gabriel Smith III. Honorary Pallbearers will be Carl Merrick, Verle Greywater, Dallas Littlewind Sr., Floyd McKay, Doreen “Ma Cakes” McKay, Michael TwoHearts, Bernard TwoHearts, Buddy Longie, Joseph Lawrence Sr., Solomon Sherman, Andrew Shaw Sr., Demus McDonald, Elaine Robertson, Helena Littleghost, Catherine Howard, Jerry Jensen Sr., Robert OldRock, Christopher “Buddy” Alberts, Daniel Dubois Jr., Myra Pearson, Radell WhiteTail, David Riggle, Elmer Brown, Duane Guy, Victor Peoples, Darlene Wadsworth, Vincent (Belva) Greyhorn and Kenneth Dunn. We know Vincent Raymond touched many lives and loved you all. If we have forgotten to mention anyone, it is not intentional.
