ANNA S. QUICK

Anna S. Quick of Starkweather, ND passed away on Tuesday evening, August 28, 2012 at the Garrison Hospital, Garrison, ND. She was 95 years old. Funeral Services for Anna will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake with Rev. Jeanette Sandlin, granddaughter of Anna, officiating. Anna will be laid to rest beside her husband, James at the Assumption of Mary Catholic Cemetery, Starkweather. Visitation will be held on Friday at the Gilbertson Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 12:00 noon until time of service. Anna Selma was born on June 1, 1917 in a little house on the prairie near Starkweather, ND. Anna was the eldest of eight children born to Severin and Sophie (Anderson) Sather, Norwegian immigrants of the early 1900’s. She was baptized (8/26/1917) and a confirmed (7/12/1931) member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Anna grew up on the family farm in Royal Township. When she began school in September of 1923 at Royal Township Country School #2 (Revis) she spoke only Norwegian. She quickly learned English and taught her parents and other siblings how to speak English. She passed the State Exams required by country students and took part in a county graduation (just for country kids) at the Edmore High School then enrolled in the Starkweather High School graduating on June 1, 1934. After graduating, Anna worked for several farm families in the area and especially enjoyed working for Louis and Carrie Leet in Webster for several years. Anna was united in marriage to James R. Quick, son of James F. and Katie (McRae) Quick on New Years Day, January 1, 1940 at Starkweather. Together they lived and worked side by side on the Quick home place in Klingstrup Township for the next 28 ½ years. They raised small grains, feed for the livestock and planted huge gardens. By 1947, Anna and James were the proud parents of five children, James, Roberta, Richard, Joan and Mary Ellen and by 1954 the family of 7 was complete with the addition of John and Marcia. In 1948, a new home was built on the family farm and electricity was a reality. The Singer treadle sewing machine, a gift to Anna’s mother on the day she was born, was able to be retired. Anna had used the Singer to sew many of her own clothes and clothes for her siblings and many others. With a new electric sewing machine, Anna continued to make clothing for her children and others, including wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, formals and costumes. On the morning of May 30, 1968, Memorial Day, Anna’s husband Jim passed away. She continued to live on the farm and on October 1, 1971 began working at the Ramsey County Auditor’s office in Devils Lake. She retired in September of 1985. The family was always very busy and involved with church, community, 4-H and school and all its extra-curricular activities. Anna served as the co-leader of the Starkweather Willing Worker’s 4-H Club for fifteen years and was also a member of the Starkweather Harmony Homemakers Club. She was active in the Senior Meals Program at Starkweather and the Ramsey County Senior Council. Anna enjoyed travel and traveled to many areas of the United States and also enjoyed trips to England and Norway. Anna was a walking “history book” and was the historian for the Sather and Quick families and also the Starkweather area. Anna was also very instrumental in the planning and participating in Starkweather All School Reunions. Anna knew the heartache of death, tornados, storms and the Depression but knew the joy of birth, weddings and friends and neighbors helping each other or just getting together to enjoy each other’s company. Many hours of fun were spent playing Rook, Pinochle, and Whist. Anna lived nearly a century and saw many fantastic and unbelievable changes. She often commented she couldn’t imagine what the world would be like in fifty years and beyond. Anna is survived by her beloved family. Her children and their spouses, Jim and Jackie Quick of Fort Collins, Colorado, Roberta “Bobby” and Wayne Paintner of Sundance, Wyoming, Joan and Dennis Bangen of Casper, Wyoming, Mary Ellen and Jim Spenningsby of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and Marcia and Mike Zimmerman of Garrison, North Dakota and daughter-in-law, Joan Quick of Fargo, ND; fifteen grandchildren, Alissa Quick, Katie May and Jeanette (Mark) Sandlin, Kara (Jim) Paintner-Green, Krista (Gray) Rudolph and Karla (Jon) Weng, Anne Spenningsby, Kristopher (Kelly) Spenningsby and Michael (Erica) Spenningsby, Scott Quick, John Quick and Patricia (Jason) Moses, Annie (Eric) Lukkari, Cyndie (Corey) Behles and Jim (Claudia) Zimmerman and twenty great grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Erickstad of Devils Lake, Ines Tyler of Portland, Oregon and Gladys (Bill) Provance of Roseau, Minnesota and brother Gordon (Margaret) Sather of Starkweather; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James; sons Richard Quick and John R. Quick and sisters Ellen Wilhelmi, Velma DeFrates and Elsie Sather. Serving as Casket Bearers for Anna will be her grandchildren, Alissa Quick, Katie May, Kara Paintner-Green, Krista Rudolph, Karla Weng, Anne Spenningsby, Kristopher Spenningsby, Michael Spenningsby, Scott Quick, John Quick, Patricia Moses, Annie Lukkari and Jim Zimmerman.
