Giles Yankton (Dancing Horse) passed away just two days after his 80th Birthday and his 20th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 6, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in Lakota after an extended illness. Giles was born Sept 4th, 1932 and was a life-long resident of the Spirit Lake Nation.
Mass of Christian Burial for Giles will be held on Thursday, September 13th at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael, ND. Fr. Brian Moen will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Spirit Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547.
The Wake will be held at St. Michael’s Recreation Center on Wednesday, September 12th beginning at 5 p.m. with the Rosary and Prayer Service at 8 p.m. The procession to St. Michael’s Recreation Center will leave from the Spirit Lake Marina parking lot at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Giles attended St. Michael’s School, Haskill Indian College and graduated from Lake Region Junior College. He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for four years then served for twelve years with the Army National Guard. Giles retired from Indian Health Service after 30 years and then was the director at Sioux Utilities for 8 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s parish.
Predeceased by his father Alexander Yankton and his mother Angeline (Redhorse) Yankton and sisters Catherine Yankton and Angeline LaCroix; brothers Paul Yankton Sr. Andrew Yankton and James Yankton.
He is survived by his wife Delores (Cavanaugh) Yankton, and mother of his children in New York, Catherine Barney Yankton, daughters, Renee A. Crofoot (Richard), Diana Foote (Brian), sons Douglas G. Yankton (Starlet) and Darren Yankton of Spirit Lake;
Stepchildren: Kelly Minor(Rick), Kimberly (David) Gordon, Jody Arttus, Margaret (Willard) Chaske, Mark Mindt, Bruce Mindt and Kevin Mindt and twelve grandchildren and eleven step grandchildren.
Serving as Active Pallbearers for Giles will be Winterhawk Oldrock, Lance Young, Joe Yankton, Roman Cavanaugh, Dave Gordon, and Mark Mindt.
