Virginia Schmitz, 83 of Devils Lake formerly of Foxholm and Minot, ND passed away on Friday evening, September 21, 2012 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND
Mass of Christian Burial for Virginia will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Fr. C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass.
Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. with Fr. Prasaad officiating.
Virginia Elizabeth was born on June 16, 1929 at Kenmare, North Dakota the daughter of Charles and Hannah (Thompson) Ackerman. She attended grade school in Kenaston, ND and graduated from Kenmare High School.
Virginia was united in marriage to Bernard John Schmitz on August 25, 1947 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare. They established their home on the Schmitz family farm at Foxholm. They later moved to Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family.
Virginia worked as the manager of the Dotty Dunn Hat Shop and later worked for the city of Devils Lake’s Water Department. Virginia retired from the North Dakota State Highway Department.
Virginia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Virginia was an avid reader, enjoyed watching classic movies and playing bridge and rummy with her dear friends.

Virginia is survived by her children and their spouses, Nancy and Peter Goeser of Carlin, NV, Randy and Barbara Schmitz of Jamestown, ND, Chuck and Bonnie Schmitz also of Jamestown, Jane and Bryan Guedesse of Hamilton, IL and Jim and Lynn Schmitz of Coon Rapids, MN; nine grandchildren, Daren (Jovan) Martin, Shawn (Hilary) Schmitz, Randy Schmitz Jr., Cindy Schmitz, Michael Schmitz, Niki Schmitz, Holly Cosgrove, Larisa (Todd) Jackson and Wendy (David) Boos; six great grandchildren, Alyson Martin, Mason Martin, Sabrina Schmitz, Michael Schmitz Jr., Zachary Boos and Allison Boos; sister Barbara and her husband Merwyn Johnson of Cando; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, David Schmitz, Carol Feuillerat, Adeline Schweitzer and Betty Schmitz and many niece and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bernard who passed away on November 26, 2011; grandchild Brianne Guedesse; brother Robert Ackerman and sister Harriet Ackerman.
