Lloyd George, son of Simon and Celia (Keating) Hinschberger was born on a farm at Eckelson, ND and lived there until grown. He graduated from Eckelson High School in 1934 at the height of the depression. In 1936, Lloyd left the farm for Minneapolis. In 1937 he returned to Valley City, ND and enrolled at Valley City State College. He went to school and worked part time until World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Navy in January 1942 and served his country in the Aleutian Islands off the Alaskan Coast. While home on leave in 1944, he met Evelyn McCommon at a dance in Jamestown, ND. After Lloyd was honorably discharged from the Navy, he and Evelyn were united in marriage on June 20, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN. Lloyd and Evelyn made their home in Minneapolis for thirteen years. Lloyd worked eight years for the Veteran’s Administration until leaving to manage Minnesota Valley Country Club. He was employed there until coming to Devils Lake in September 1958 to manage Keating’s Furniture. Lloyd held this position until 1978 when he and Evelyn purchased the store from Keatings. In 1983, Lloyd retired and he and Evelyn continued to make Devils Lake their home. After 62 wonderful years together, Evelyn died on September 27, 2008. Lloyd was very active in the community and his church. Lloyd was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, served on the Parish Council and Board of the Fr. Gerald Crisis Fund. He was also an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge and served as a Devils Lake City Commissioner with the Fire and Police Department Portfolio. Living in a house with nine children, it was no surprise that Lloyd loved the outdoors; doing yard work, tending his garden and caring for many varieties of plants and flowers, with roses as his specialty. As each flower bloomed in its season, Lloyd often made it a point to have a fresh flower in a vase for Evelyn. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf with his family and friends. Two events Lloyd and Evelyn enjoyed with special friends were the Class B Basketball Tournaments and an annual golf outing. While tucking his children into bed, Lloyd told many bedtime stories and incredible tales of days gone by. Lloyd is survived by his children; Renee Powell (Doug), Grand Forks, ND; Cheryl Hinschberger, Thief River Falls, MN; Kathleen Hinschberger, Grand Forks, ND; Kevin Hinschberger (Kip), Grand Forks, ND; Lynne Webster (Steve), Devils Lake, ND; Brian Hinschberger (Linda), Bybee, TN; Richard Hinschberger (Phillip Burk), Columbia, MO; Mary Lamb (Tom), Carbondale, CO; Deborah Snustad (John), Grand Forks, ND; nine grandchildren; Lisa Powell-Beaver (Frank), Todd Powell, Laura Hinschberger, Michael Hinschberger, Ben Webster, Matthew Webster (Katie), Adam Webster, Luke Snustad and Mariah Snustad; step grandchildren Randy Shull, Kevin Shull, Tami Packwood and Joel Marchus; 23 great grandchildren; sister, Marie Baker, Mesa, Arizona; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Howard Zinck, Michael “Mick” Hogan, Florence Betsch, LaMerne Hinschberger, and Bev Hinschberger; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
