Rita Ann Smith-Volk, 55 of Tokio, ND, our beloved Mother, Sister, Grandma, Auntie, Niece, Cousin and Dear Friend left for the Spirit World on Sunday morning, November 4, 2012 at the Lakota Good Samaritan Center, Lakota, ND
A Wake and Prayer Service for Rita will be held at the Woodlake Wellness Center, Tokio, ND on Friday, November 9th beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The procession to Woodlake will leave from the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Funeral Services for Rita will also be held at the Woodlake Wellness Center on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Brian Moen officiating. Rita will be laid to rest with her other departed family members at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Michael, ND.
Serving as Casket Bearers will be Waylon Smith, Justin Hook, Leonard “Moose” Smith, Lonnie Smith, Darwin Brown and Michael Lacroix.
Honorary Bearers will be Ella Langstaff and family, John Posey and family, Curtis Posey and family, Ed Greywind and family, Caroline Greywind and family, Wesley Young, Jay Young, Dean Young, Trudy (Clint) LaRock, Kenny Greywind and family, Virgil and Vonnie Feather and family, Ella Lafrombois and family, Darwin Brown, Roger Brown, Elizabeth Lawrence and family, Carrie Ann Smith, Kelly Brown and family, Geraldine RedFox and family, Joel (Natalie) RedFox and family, Evelyn Ross, Paul and Loretta Stensland and family, Corrine Brown and family, Yvonne Thompson and family, Al Hegland and family, Gloria Hedine and family, Elmer Brown, Henrietta Longie, Wilma Longie and Casper Demarce and special thanks to the Lakota Nursing Home and Staff. Music will be provided by Loretta Stensland and family and Tony and Vina McDonald. Any drum groups are welcome to come and sing.
Rita Ann was born June 6th, 1957, the daughter of Simon and Sarah (Young) Smith. She grew up in the Tokio area and she attended school at the Wahpeton Indian School and Maddock. Later on she attended Little Hoop Community College and received her CDA. She worked with the Spirit Lake Head Start, REM Corporation in Devils Lake and Sioux Manufacturing Corp. (SMC) in Fort Totten.
Rita spent most of her early years with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed doing Arts and Crafts with her children and loved baking with them also. Rita was a “people person” and loved spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoyed music and reading books.
Rita lived in Moorhead, Minnesota for about 5 years then recently moved back to Devils Lake. Because of her illness, she was a resident of the Lakota Nursing Home as she left to the Spirit World. Rita’s fun and loving spirit and laughter will be dearly missed by her loving family and many friends and relatives.
Rita’s Loving Children and Grandchildren: daughters, Rebekah Volk, Sarah Volk and Samantha Volk; sons, Damion Volk and James Volk Jr.; grandchildren, Cindy Volk, Vanessa Volk and Lillian Grace (Volk) Jackson.
Rita’s Loving Family: brothers and sisters, Calvin (Violet) Smith, David Smith, Josephine Smith and Cynthia Hunt; aunties, Sharon (Albin Sr.) Georgeson, Hilda (Louie) Garcia, Alberta RedFox and Kay RedFox; special auntie, Elizabeth Lawrence and many other aunts, nieces, nephews and their families.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; a daughter Cynthia Renae Volk; brothers Leonard Demarce, Gabriel Smith Sr., Joseph Smith and Michael Smith and sister Florine Smith.
