Joseph Brown Sr., “Mah’piya Ska Hoksina” (White Cloud Boy) 85 of New Rockford, formerly of Tokio, ND passed away on Wednesday evening, March 13, 2013 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford.
A Wake for Joe will be held at the WoodLake Wellness Center, Tokio, ND on Thursday, March 21, 2013 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Rosary and Prayer Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. The procession to Tokio will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday from Wal-Mart.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, March 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael, ND with Fr. Charles Leute, OP and Fr. Anthony Hession concelebrating the Mass. Joe will be laid to rest in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547.
Music will be provided by Tony and Vina McDonald and various Drum Groups.
Joseph was born on December 12, 1927 at the Fort Totten Hospital, the son of Henry and Winifred (Jackson) Brown. He grew up on the Brown homestead at Sheyenne, ND. He attended boarding school in Fort Totten and St. Michael. The family later moved to Tokio.
Joseph entered the United States Army on April 25, 1946 and served his country during World War II. He served with the 56th Air Engineering Squadron/31st Air Service Group and was honorably discharged on June 14, 1947 at Camp Stoneman, California. He returned to Sheyenne and worked as a farm laborer for area farmers. He also worked for a time at Sioux Manufacturing Corporation.
Visiting, sharing stories and memories with family and friends was Joe’s idea of the best day ever. He enjoyed going to the Casino, because again, it was a place to see friends and family and share time together.
On November 14, 2007, Joe moved to the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd due to increasing health problems and continued to make his home there until his death.
Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Brown Jr.; brother, Elmer Brown; adopted daughter, Dianne Jackson; aunt, Pauline Greywater and cousins, Violet Smith, Alvina Bear and Yvonne Thompson; special niece, Corrine Brown; nieces, Bernadette (Craig) Brown, Rebecca Brown, Debbie Little and the Littlewind Girls from CrowHill; nephews, Russell (Debbie) Smith, Robert (MaryAnn) Brown and Wesley Brown; very special Granddaughter and Grandpa’s pride and joy, Courtney Brown; special granddaughters, Amy (Tony) Brown, Holly Brown, Constance Brown, Morning Star Brown, Estelle Joshua, Rochelle Guy and Kersten Redfox Morin; special grandsons, Allen Brown, Eldwin Guy and Tennyson Blueshield; special great grandchildren, Jayryl Guy, Jayla Guy, Kylen Guy, Kylana Guy, Xavier Brown, NaKomis Lawrence, Aubree Lawrence and Kyler Lawrence.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Henry Brown; mother, Winifred Brown Cloud; step father, Sam Cloud; brothers, Patrick Brown and Alfred Brown; sisters, Sylvia Brown and Marie Brown; adopted son, Nathan Jones; nephews, Gerald Longie Sr., Clifford Brown, Freeman Brown, Curtis Greene and Allen Brown; daughter-in-law, Bernetta Joshua.
