LLOYD ALLEN ZACHER

Lloyd A. Zacher, local retired business man, passed away on Saturday morning, May 11, 2013 at his home in rural Devils Lake. He was 72 years of age. Mass of the Resurrection for Lloyd will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church and he will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake. Fr. C.F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Casket Bearers for Lloyd will be his grandchildren, Aaron Zacher, Josh Zacher, Chance Zacher, Karissa Hendrickson and Nick Hendrickson and neighbor, George Wang. Honorary Bearers will be Al and Julie Nieuwsma, Allan and Patty Stock, Carl and Rose Duchscherer, Dean and Marlene Broten, Bill and Marcy Blomquist, Rita and Cordell Streifel, Glenn Rigg and Bob Howard and all of Lloyd's dear family and friends. Reading the Scriptures will be Barry Miller, Lloyd’s nephew and Gift Bearers will be beloved family members, Butch and Kathy Zacher, Angie Ziegler and Troy Zacher. Music will be provided by Tom Burckhard and Audrey Myklebust. Lloyd Allen Zacher was born to Harry and Ann (Eisenzimmer) Zacher in Rugby, ND on September 3, 1940. They lived in Balta until 1946 then moved to Ogden, Utah. In 1951, the family moved back to North Dakota, lived in Esmond for a short time and finally moving to a farmstead in Maddock in 1954. While in high school Lloyd was active in FFA and Shop. He graduated in 1959 from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School (BCATS). After graduation, he moved to Devils Lake, working for Armour’s Truck Stop and was a volunteer fireman. He later went to work for Goodyear Tire working for Lloyd Pederson, who was his mentor in the business world. In 1960, Lloyd met the love of his life, Bernie Heilman, daughter of Kasper and Mary Heilman. They wed on June 1, 1963, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake. They were the proud parents of two children, Sheila and Craig. In 1970, they moved to Maddock and bought “The Grill” (restaurant). They ran a very successful business until 1978 when they decided to move back to Devils Lake, purchasing a beautiful place in the country where Lloyd enjoyed his many hobbies. He and Leonard Ziegler started Lake Region Diesel and in 2000 decided to retire after 20 years in the diesel business. During his life, Lloyd played guitar in various country bands for 26 years. In that time, he made many lifetime friends that he kept in contact with through the years. He also loved to fish with his wife, grandkids and many friends during the summer and winter months. His grandchildren also shared Lloyd and Bernie’s passion for classic cars, especially their 1963 Chevy Impala SS. They participated in Devils Run for many years up until 2012. They enjoyed taking many wonderful trips together in their motor home, meeting up with friends and family. But most of all, he loved tinkering in his shop/yard and growing a fantastic garden every summer. Lloyd is survived by his wife Bernie; daughter Sheila Hendrickson of Minneapolis, MN, son Craig Zacher of Devils Lake; grandchildren Aaron (Sarah) Zacher, Josh Zacher, Chance Zacher, Karissa Hendrickson, Nickolas Hendrickson and great grandson, Breydee Zacher; sisters Carol Miller, Washburn, ND, Angie (Don) Ziegler, Devils Lake and Shirley (Curt) Larson, Tucson, AZ; brother Dennis “Butch” (Kathy) Zacher also Devils Lake; aunts Alice Fisher of Utah and Irene Stoeber of Colorado and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Ann; father-in-law and mother-in-law Mary and Kasper Heilman; brother Ron Zacher; brother-in-law Bill Miller; nephew Todd Miller; uncles and aunt Frank and Rema Zacher, Bud Fisher and Bob Stoeber.
