J. Dale Martz, 85 of Devils Lake formerly of rural Calvin, ND passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Heartland Care Center in the loving care of his family and Mercy Hospice.
Funeral Services for Dale will be held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in the All Nations Cemetery, Rock Lake, ND immediately following the funeral service.
Visitation will be held at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
James Dale, son of Casper and Marguerite (Copelan) Martz was born on November 27, 1927 in Towner County on the family farm, rural Calvin, ND. He would live a major portion of his life on the family farm. His elementary education was at the Mt. Pleasant Country School. He graduated from Calvin High School with the class of 1945.
Dale was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nona M. Jacobsen in October of 1950 at Rock Lake, ND. They lived, raised their sons and farmed side by side for over 39 years on the family farm at Calvin They also raised a variety of livestock including cattle, sheep and others on the farm. Dale and Nona moved to Devils Lake in 1989 where they continue to make their home.
In addition to the hard work and long hours of farming, Dale was also one of the founders of the Towner County State Bank of Cando. Together the founders grew a small town bank to what is now known as American Bank Center of Cando and Devils Lake.
While living in Calvin, Dale was a very active member of his church, All Nations Lutheran Church and also of his community, serving on several boards and volunteering on many of the community and area projects. After moving to Devils Lake, Dale and Nona joined St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
When there was time for a bit of relaxation, Dale loved hunting, fishing and gardening.
Hard work, dedication, service to God and community were very special qualities of Dale. The role of devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and brother were those qualities held most dear by his family. He will be so greatly missed.
Dale is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Nona; sons, Daryl and his wife, Linda of Littleton, CO, Larry and his wife, Elaine of Portland, ND, twins Richard of Emerado, ND and Randy of Rolla, ND and David of Devils Lake; grandchildren, Dale Martz, Alan Martz, Jennifer Thorson, Steven Martz, Kevin Martz, Jamie Martz, Peter Martz, Eleanor Scharmer, Sherri Houle and Christina Martz; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Delores Heldt, Cando, ND, Marlys (Carl) Jacobsen, Rock Lake, ND, June (Dennis) Farbo, Bismarck, ND and Emily Walker, Lakewood, CO; brother, Kenneth (Verna) Martz, Bennington, OK; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carl (Marlys) Jacobsen and Jim (Eileen) Jacobsen both of Rock Lake, ND, Alice Lamkin, California and Joyce Mcdowell of Moorhead, MN; many nieces and nephews
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Martz; sister, Loretta Veden; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Martha Jacobsen.
