HENRY "HANK" HINDERSCHEIT

Henry “Hank” Hinderscheit, 90, of rural Sheyenne, ND passed away early Friday morning, June 21, 2013 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of the Resurrection for Henry will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Charles Leute, OP will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held on Monday at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Serving as Casket Bearers for Henry will be Eugene LaMotte, Jr., Rodney Smith, David Eversvik, Glen Wallace, Dennis Kurtz and Laudi Griffin. Henry, son of Nick and Elizabeth Maria (Schick) Hinderscheit was born on August 18, 1922 at Plummer, MN. At a young age the family moved to the Tokio area, where Henry attended school. Within days of graduating from the 8th grade, Henry rode horse-back out West, stopping in the New Salem area. He worked as a ranch hand on the Ormiston Ranch. Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 10, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN. He served his country with the 1st Marine Division during World War II in the Pacific Theater, where he served as a tank driver and gunner. “Wires” and “Cody” were the nicknames he had at that time. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on December 15, 1945 and was the recipient of several commendations and medals including a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. After several years of long distance communication (writing letters to each other during the war), Henry was united in marriage to LulaMae Johnson on February 28, 1946 at St. Michael, ND. They lived several places in Benson County the first years of their marriage but eventually made the Spook Ranch, near the beautiful Wood Lake area, their home for over 60 years. Hank and LulaMae ranched side by side and raised their children to work hard and have a strong faith. Because ranching alone wasn’t enough to provide for his family, for over 40 years, Hank worked as a carpenter and many of those years as the foreman for Erickson and Pederson Construction in Devils Lake. He retired from carpentry, but never retired from ranching. Henry continued to want to contribute to taking care of the cattle and was still helping with haying by doing some of the raking last summer. Henry was a member of the Sheyenne VFW, Seven Dolors Catholic Church and enjoyed past membership with the Eagles Lodge. Henry’s life was one of service-to his family, to his country and to his Lord. He was very proud of his children, teaching them the meaning of hard work, honesty, loyalty and dedication. He was a very devoted husband and father. Henry always had a soft spot for animals. He will be truly missed, loved always and never forgotten. Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, LulaMae, rural Sheyenne; four children, Tom Hinderscheit and his wife, Paulette of Hot Springs, SD, LuAnn Hinderscheit and Lori Hinderscheit both of Devils Lake and Todd Hinderscheit of rural Sheyenne; three grandchildren, Chad (Carrie) Hinderscheit, Brush, CO, Codi Nincehelser, Pierre, SD and Carie (Coleman) Flaherty, Broomfield, CO; six great grandchildren, Hannah, Chase, Jackson, Ivy, Kellen and Conrad; sister-in-law, Doris Kirsch, Circle Pines, MN; many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard Allen; brothers, Elmer Hinderscheit and Ralph Kirsch.
