Alma Helen, daughter of Cornelis W. “C.W.” and Helen (Neufeld) Janzen was born on December 24, 1921 on the family homestead in Gordon Township, Cavalier County, rural Alsen, ND. Alma attended grade school at Alsen and graduated from Alsen High School. After graduating, Alma attended the Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot, ND and graduated as a Registered Nurse with the class of 1944. She worked at Trinity Hospital until her marriage. Alma was united in marriage to her beloved Archie J. Hoffman on October 28, 1944 at Munich, ND. While Archie was stationed in Oklahoma with the Navy, Alma nursed at the Wesley Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma until the birth of their first child. When Archie was discharged, the family moved back to North Dakota and began farming, ranching and raising their family at rural Munich. In 1968, Alma took a Nursing Refresher Course and then in January of 1969 she began nursing on the medical floor at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake. This passion for those who needed her care, kindness, medical expertise and compassion continued through the years. Alma retired in October of 1987 so she and Archie could spend their winters in Arizona. Alma was always a true farmer’s wife. She milked the cows, herded the cattle, kept a diary of the crops planted and harvested and daily weather conditions of the growing season. She was the dedicated helping hand on the farm until just a few years ago. Alma was a life-time member of the Salem Church in Munich and a faithful member of the Be Ye Doers of the church. Alma loved nursing and caring for her patients. She was a devoted, wife, mother and grandmother and a woman of strong faith. She was very proud of her granddaughters and great granddaughter who went into the nursing profession. She loved to crochet afghans and make patchwork quilts for herself and family. She also loved to do crossword puzzles. Alma is survived by her loving family.
