RICHARD B. GUNN

Richard B. “Dick” Gunn, 84 of Langdon formerly of rural Devils Lake, ND passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon, ND. Mass of the Resurrection for Dick will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Fr. Matthew Kraemer and Fr. William McDermott concelebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Scripture Service and Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. all at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for Richard will be Keith Gunn, Aaron Gunn, Howard McLean, Wayne McLean, Don McLean and Steve McLean. Honorary Bearers will be Clifford Brekken, Glenn Weirick and Glen Regan. Music will be provided by Joetta McLean and JoDee Lagein. Reading the Scriptures will be Terri Zimmerman and Melissa Gunn. Gift Bearers will be Hannah and Gage Zimmerman. Richard Benjamin, was born September 18, 1929 at Hannah, ND, the son of Lottie (Skene) and Benjamin Gunn. He lived with his parents at rural Hannah and attended Byron School. As a young man he farmed with his father until 1951 when he joined the Army. Richard began his service to his country on May 29, 1951 and was stationed in Alaska. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1953 with the rank of Corporal. After his discharge, Dick returned to Hannah and farmed on his own until 1966. He worked in Minnesota for four years before coming to Devils Lake in 1970. He worked as a carpenter for Erickson Construction until 1980 when he started his own radiator repair business which he owned and operated from 1980 until 1991 when he retired. Dick married Delphina Ford at Devils Lake in 1974 and they resided at the family home in rural Devils Lake. Delphina passed away on November 8, 1999. Dick lived at the Odd Fellows home for about 1 year and at Heartland Care Center, both in Devils Lake, for a short time. For the past 5 years, Dick has made Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon his home. Dick always had a passion for farming. He never considered it work. It was a joy to be outdoors, serving as a steward of the land. Dick had a special talent as a self-taught butcher and knew his “cuts of meat”. He loved outings with family and friends to the casinos, Dairy Queen, “grill night” and playing cards at Maple Manor. He always had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and their children. He was always young at heart and Debbie’s two grandchildren could always make him smile. Dick was a life member of the American Legion and past member of the Odd Fellows. We have lost someone very special to us and we will miss him greatly. Dick is survived by his nieces and nephews: Steve (Linda) McLean of Inner Grove Heights, MN, Donald (Diane) McLean of River Falls, WI, Howard (Jody) McLean of Argyle, MN, Norma McLean of Fargo, ND; Keith (Debbie) Gunn of Hannah, ND, Terri Zimmerman of Fargo, Julie Gunn (Steve Pittenger) of Ocean City, New Jersey; sister-in-law, Janice Glaser of Warroad, MN; many grand nieces and grand nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delphina; sisters, Esther Gunn, Charlotte Gunn and Lorraine Johnson; brother, Donald Gunn and nephew, Kip McLean.
