Elsie M. Halvorson, 92 of Devils Lake formerly of the Starkweather area of ND passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Funeral Services for Elsie will be held on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Rev. Jeff Nicla will officiate and Elsie will be laid to rest in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.
Honorary Bearers for Elsie will be Keith Nielsen, Bruce Pallansch, Lee Tangelin, Renil Hansen, Larry Nielsen, John Hobbs, Evie Senecal and all members of the Bridge Club.
Elsie Matina, was born at Starkweather, ND on July 24, 1921, the daughter of Mads and Karen (Dahl) Nielsen. She grew up on the farm north of Starkweather, and attended school at Starkweather, graduating from high school there in 1939. She also attended the Capital Business College in Bismarck, ND.
Elsie married L.M. “Doc” Halvorson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Starkweather, on September 15, 1946. They lived their married life in Devils Lake.
She worked for many years in the Ramsey County Courthouse, serving as County Auditor in 1950. She also worked as bookkeeper for their family business “Doc’s Dairy Delivery” for 23 years. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
She loved to bowl, golf, garden and play Bridge. She was a National Seniors Master member of the American Contract Bridge League, and a player in local Bridge clubs. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Elsie is survived by her son
Warren and his wife, Barbara of Woodstock, Virginia and her son, Doug of Devils Lake and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harry Nielsen, her sister, Marie Dressler and her husband Doc who passed away on September 10, 1982.
