Mavis Arlene Stein was born on February 6, 1936, to Peter and Etta (Brekken) Stein in the family’s home. She attended a country school, schools in Lakota and Pekin, and graduated from Doyon High School in 1954. During her school years, she was active in 4-H where she showed Brown Swiss cattle at many county and state fairs. She was a Ramsey County Dairy Princess. In high school, she was a cheerleader for the Doyon Pirates.
Mavis met her future husband, Lloyd T. Stromme, at Max and Mary Jane Gilbraith’s wedding dance. Lloyd and Mavis were married at Sacred Heart Parish in Crary, North Dakota, on July 7, 1954. While living with Lloyd’s parents, Clarence and Pauline (Zettler) Stromme, their daughter, Ann Marie, was born in 1955. In the spring of 1956, they moved onto their own farm, with another daughter, Jan Louise. James Robert and Jolene Mavis were born in 1957 and 1960 respectively. Mavis loved life on the farm and was a great helpmate to Lloyd. Our family has fond memories of her love of family and the farm.
Mavis was chairman of the Ramsey County American Cancer Society for several years, was a 4-H leader, member of Catholic Daughters and the VFW Auxiliary.
Lloyd and Mavis shared 59 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling with neighbors, winters in AZ with Loy and Gerald, and quiet times at the house in Lakota. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, of West Fargo, her children, Ann (Greg) Dye of Fargo, Jan Langton of Devils Lake, James (LuAnn) on the family farm at Crary, and Jolene of Gilbert, AZ.
