Harold W. Nielsen 89, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Starkweather, ND died Sunday Jan 12, 2014 at Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 22nd at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Bergen Lutheran Church in Starkweather with Pastor Robert Buechler officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday January 21st at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake and one hour prior to funeral services on Wednesday at the church. Harold will be laid to rest in the spring at the Trinity Bergen Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren. Douglas, Rebecca and Kristina Nielsen, Morgan Clendenning, Rachel and Karolyn Upham and Sarah (Gavin) Dinning. Harold William Nielsen was born November 3rd 1924 at Starkweather, ND the son of Chris and Gladys (Townsend) Nielsen. Harold attended Starkweather school and graduated from high school in 1943. After graduation he attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton N.D. studying welding and general mechanics. He was united in marriage to Florene Schumacher on October 7th 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Egeland ND. Harold was a life long farmer north of Starkweather, and enjoyed working in all aspects of farm life. Although retiring in 1987, Harold and Florene continued to live on the farm helping their sons until they moved to Devils Lake in 2009. Harold was an active member of Trinity -Bergen Lutheran Church, and served on many church and township boards throughout the years. Harold is survived by his wife Florene of Devils Lake, two sons Keith (Laura) and Steven (Dawn) both of Starkweather; two daughters Judy (Walter) Upham of Beavercreek, Ohio and Terri Clendenning of Orangevale, CA; one brother Howard (Ethel) of Twin Falls, Idaho; one sister Fern Axelson of Zumbro Falls, MN, and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Frank, Vego and Harvey Nielsen, two sisters Chloe Foster and Gladys Jacobson and one son-in-law Stephen Clendenning.
