Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Margaret Ilene Anderson was born on September 5, 1919 to Asmund Anderson and Johanna Dahl Anderson at her grandparents’ home at rural Crary, ND. She was the oldest of eleven children. Growing up she helped her Dad in the fields until her brothers were old enough to help. It wasn’t all work and no play-there were a lot of fun times playing with cousins and friends. In her older years she loved remembering the “house parties” and visiting with friends and relatives, the Dahls, the Briens, the Haugens and many other friends and relatives. Margaret attended school in Crary, sometimes staying with her Grandma Dahl who was very strict. There was no dancing or playing cards. In 1933, the Anderson family moved to a farm near Southam, ND. On June 19th, 1940 Margaret married Lloyd Carlson from Warwick, ND. They resided on the Carlson farm north of Warwick. She worked hard on the farm, as most farmers’ wives did, with no conveniences, but it wasn’t all work. Visiting friends and neighbors was a regular occurrence and going to “Ladies Aid” and other activities at the church and in the community. While living on the farm three children were born-Pat (1941), Doug (1943) and Dwight (1947). In the fall of 1950 the Carlsons moved into the city of Warwick. In 1956 another son, Dallas was born. Over the years Margaret worked at the post office in Warwick and for a number of years she cooked at the school. In 1969 Lloyd and Margaret started caring for foster children. She did this for several years even after Lloyd died in May of 1973. On February 4, 1977 Margaret married Martin Quam in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She stopped raising foster children and she and Martin had a great life together camping and travelling around. Martin passed away on April 13, 1993. They lived in Devils Lake for a few months before Martin died and after his death, she moved back to her house in Warwick. After a few years in Warwick she moved back to Devils Lake. One of the big highlights of Margaret’s life was her trip to Norway with her cousin Alda from Saskatchewan. They had a very enjoyable 3 week visit with their relatives. On February 19, 2014 Margaret moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake after falling and breaking her hip. Margaret is survived by a daughter, Pat (Stanley) Sigette, Devils Lake and sons Douglas (Darlene) Carlson also of Devils Lake, Dwight (Ilene) Carlson, Camrose, Alberta, Canada and Dallas (Robyn Stearns) Carlson of Bismarck, ND; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; a sister Alyce Grishkowski of Beulah, ND; two brothers Howard (Sharon) Anderson of Eugene, OR and Harold (Doris) Anderson of Bagley, MN and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Virginia Anderson, Tacoma, WA and Nanette Anderson, Great Falls, MT. She was preceded in death by her husbands Lloyd and Martin; great granddaughter Nicole Wakefield, great grandson Mikal Wakefield; grandson-in-law Tom Wakefield; sisters Harriet Allard, Doris Burt and Dorothy Anderson; brothers James, John, Donald and Gary Anderson and many Quam-in-laws.
