Maurice William Barton was born 13 October 1916 in Jamestown, ND, to John and Lenore [Wilmart] Barton. He attended Jamestown schools and studied newspaper mechanics at Wahpeton School of Science. From his start delivering papers for the Jamestown Sun as a boy until retiring as Production Manager at the Devils Lake Daily Journal, Morrie thrived on the challenges and technologies of the newspaper industry, dedicating many of his “retirement” years to helping regional newspapers enter the digital era.
He married Margaret Dunphy in August 1941, enjoying a loving 68-year marriage until her passing in 2010.
Enlisting in the Army Signal Corps in 1942, Morrie was stationed in the South Pacific with the 5th Airforce Command Signal Corps until 1945. After his WWII service, he resumed his newspaper career and started a family with Margaret. They raised five children in Devils Lake, Mary, Jerry, Rebecca, Colleen and Rosanne.
Morrie’s legacy is the familial love, duty, and compassion he displayed each of his 97 years.
Maurice is survived by his loving family. His children and their spouses, Mary J. and Dave Cichos of Rugby, ND, Jerry and Mary Barton of Eau Claire, WI, Rebecca and Gary Dosch of Devils Lake and Rosanne and Paul Zink of Carrington, ND; seventeen Grandchildren; twenty-three Great Grandchildren; one Great Great Grandchild; sister Mary Peters of Scottsdale, AZ; several nieces and nephews and their families.
