Herbert Dennis Blueshield Sr., “Wahachaka-Toh” was born on April 18, 1936 at Fort Totten, ND and journeyed home to the Lord and family on Thursday evening, May 8, 2014 at the Parkview Aneta Care Center in Aneta.
A Wake for Herbert will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Woodlake Wellness Center, Tokio, ND beginning at 4:00 p.m. The procession to Tokio will leave at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday from Wal-Mart.
Funeral Services for Herbert will be on Friday, May 16th at 2:00 p.m. also at the Woodlake Wellness Center with Reverend Larry Thiele officiating. Herbert will be laid to rest in the Native American Cemetery, rural Tokio.
Herbert Dennis, son of Joseph and Julia (Powell) Blueshield grew up in the St. Michael and Tokio area, attending the Little Flower School in St. Michael. His mother died when he was a youngster and he and his siblings were cared for by their step mother Anna (Yuhaha) Blueshield.
Herbert married Joyce Young in 1957. They had 8 children. During the Tribal Relocation Program, they moved to Dallas, Texas and also to Oakland, California. They returned to North Dakota and Herbert worked at Melland’s Construction of Devils Lake in the 60’s, was a CHR Driver for the tribe in Fort Totten, a janitor at the Tokio Head Start Program in the early 70’s and worked at the Dakota Bingo Palace in the late 80’s. He also worked for different area farmers and ranchers through the years. He was a self-employed certified carpenter.
Herbert enjoyed playing horseshoes, going on the Internet, watching movies and working on cars.
Herb went to Mexico to visit and sight see and traveled to Canada many times to visit his family. He loved going to pow-wows and listening to CCR (Clearance Clearwater Revival) music.
On September 21, 2012, he entered the Aneta Healthcare Center until the Lord called him home.
Herb is survived by his loving family. Blueshield Jr., Joseph K. Blueshield, Alvin Blueshield, Harlen Blueshield, Edward “Rocky” Hill, Clayton (Ardell) Blueshield and Philip “Skip” Longie; nieces, Judi Ami, Karen Hall, Elaine Hall Pratt, Ramona Hall, Joanne Hall Chalmers, Louise Hall and Ethel Hall; nephew, Frank Hall; special grandson, Elijah Green; special nephew, Harlen Blueshield; special niece, Karen Longie; 72 grandkids; 127 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandsons, Valdon and Riley Morin;
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Julia Blueshield; stepmother, Anna Blueshield; sisters, Margaret, Louisa, Helen, Jean and Teresa Blueshield and Alice DuMarce; brothers, Lincoln, Peter, Thomas and Martin Blueshield, Jake Gourd and Gabriel Young; daughters, Sandy Blueshield, Rachel Blueshield and adopted daughter, Carol Jackson; granddaughter, Baby Meryl IronHawk; grandsons, Alexander Gene Longie, Hoksina Bruce Clark, Devin Fox and Dennis Blueshield; great grandsons, Avery Thomas Blueshield and Valdon Jade RedFox; nephews, Faron Emerson, George Blueshield, Peter Blueshield and Ronnie Greywater; nieces, Mary Ellen Blueshield, Sharon Blueshield and Patty Sam.
