Robert G. Shepherd Sr., 67 of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Wilton and Bismarck, ND died on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Robert Gunder Shepherd Sr. was born on July 29, 1946 to Lloyd and Louise (Hagen) Shepherd in Bismarck, ND. He was raised in Wilton and Bismarck where he graduated from High School. Later in life, he graduated from Dickinson State University with a Degree in Education.
He married Mary Iwaniw on July 4, 1966 in Bismarck, starting their life together in Regan, ND and residing in multiple locations across the US over their years together.
His loving family includes his wife; his children Robert Jr. (LouAnn) Shepherd, Devils Lake; David (Althea) Shepherd, Mandan, ND; Theresa (Kevin) Grimm, McDonough, GA; Stacy Shepherd, Locust Grove, GA; 8 grandchildren Zackery, Benjamin and Christopher Shepherd; Holly, Troy and Mindy Shepherd; Taylor and Sophie Grimm; great granddaughter Braelynn; brothers Paul (Jennifer) , Cloquet, MN; Alan (Beth) Caliente, NV; Dan, Rapid City, SD; Roger (Kayla) North Platte, NB; sisters Pam (John) Haluzak, Lindonna (Terry) Brendal and Irene (Elmer) Jaton all of Bismarck and Tammy (Keith) Manchester of California; mother-in-law Irena Iwaniw also of Bismarck; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Matthew; brothers Richard, Martin and Arthur; sister Myrtle Louise and father-in-law Peter Iwaniw.
Bob worked at multiple occupations over the years, to include 10 years in the Grain Elevator Business, 10 years in the Power Line Erection Business and 21 years as an Educator. He retired from education 6 years ago.
During Bob’s life he loved many things to include; yard work, hunting and fishing. He loved how his “islands” looked in his and Mary’s yard as well as catching the Big fish or getting that Big buck with his grandsons, and all the times with the joys of his life his granddaughters.
Bob went out of his way to help anyone in need, whether it was in Georgia during the winter or in Devils Lake in the summer and fall.
Anyone who has ever experienced his radiant “smirk” or his impatience during his beloved card games will truly remember the essence of Bob. His kids and grandkids will also cherish the resounding pride when one of them bagged the “Big One” during his favorite time of year, hunting season.
He will also be remembered by all and his loving wife, from the sheer joy when you would see the pride in his “picture perfect” yard, or how well his kids and grandkids were doing in any aspect of their lives.
Funeral Services for Robert will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, ND with Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery, rural Wilton.
Visitation will be at the Sunne Lutheran Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
