Norma Lee Putschler was born on November 30, 1931 at her family home in Gladstone, ND, the second daughter of A. F. ‘Tony’ and Anna (Reiner) Putschler. At the age of eight, the family moved to Dickinson where her father operated the Mobil Oil bulk supply company and later became Fire Chief.
Norma graduated from Dickinson High School in 1949 and on October 30th, 1950, married Lyle Vaagen at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson.
Her life was spent in Dickinson, working with her husband in the family Mobil Service Station and U-Haul rentals while raising their family of five children. Norma loved ‘her’ North Dakota and often had brochures available for friends and relatives that visited. One of her greatest loves was the Medora Musical, always trying to enjoy it with a full moon rising over the performance! She thoroughly enjoyed her trips through the Theodore Roosevelt National Park as well as trips to the Black Hills and Yellowstone.
Norma is survived by four of her five children, Nancy (Quinn) Diede, Tulsa, OK; Lori Ligman, Lancaster, CA; Jeffrey (Leatha) Vaagen, Devils Lake, ND; and Lee Ann Vaagen, Coeur d’Alene, ID; grandchildren Kathryn Franz and Sarah Vaagen; Laura Diede and Brietta Forbes; Jack, Krista, Ben and Michaela Ligman; Steven and Sierra Magnuson; Jacob, Hannah, Isaac and Rachel Vaagen.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband Lyle, her son Russell and sisters LaVerne Carroll and Mary Jane Kolster.
Memorials for Norma will be made to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
