EVA H. SCHERBENSKE

Eva Scherbenske Eva H. Scherbenske, 99, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Devils Lake, ND peaceably entered her heavenly home on Monday, June 23, 2014 at North Kansas City Hospital, North Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will be held at 10: 30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake, ND with a celebration of Eva’s life to follow at 11 a.m all on FRIDAY, JUNE 27TH Eva’s granddaughter’s husband, Pastor Joel Mosier, will officiate. A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in Jamestown, ND. Eva was born on February 21, 1915 in LaMoure, ND, the youngest of five children born to Herman and Mina Halvorson. Eva was working for the Forest Service in Jamestown, ND when she met her husband, Marvin. They were married on August 18, 1945, in LaMoure, ND. Marvin was drafted shortly thereafter and served in the army until 1946. They then lived in Minneapolis-St.Paul, MN, Naperville, IL, and New York City while Marvin finished his seminary training. During their lifetime they served churches in Hazen, ND, Beulah, ND, Marion, ND, Ellendale, ND, Devils Lake, ND, Webster, ND, and Minnewaukan, ND. Together they served in the ministry for 57 years. During their six years in Ellendale, Eva decided to get a college degree in order to help pay for their children’s college education. She graduated from Ellendale State Teacher’s College and began teaching in nearby Monango, then taught for another 17 years after she and Marvin moved to Devils Lake. After retiring from teaching, Eva still remained very active in her community. Among her activities were the following: She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, serving as its treasurer for four years, vice-president for one year, and president for two years. On September 4, 2002, she received the NDRTA’s Silver Apple Award in recognition of her meritorious service to retired teachers, children and community. Her community service includes president of the hospital auxiliary, president of the Lake Region Senior Commission on Aging, Ramsey County Cancer Board member, member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ada Chapter, member and president of the Federated Women’s Club and a volunteer at the Devils Lake hospital, nursing homes and senior center. She has quietly and unselfishly given of herself to many people. She sent cards, visited shut-ins, nursing homes and people at the hospital. In 2006 Marvin and Eva moved to Wexford Place in Kansas City where they could be closer to their children. Marvin passed away in 2008 and the last several months of Marvin’s life Eva faithfully visited him nearly every day in the nursing home, helping with his care until he died. Since then she has bravely carried on, being an encouragement to the many residents and staff at Wexford Place. She leaves behind her three children and their spouses, Stephen (Jilene) Scherbenske of Kansas City, MO, Diane (Jim) Lee of Ashburn, VA, and Dr. James (Susan) Scherbenske of Overland Park, KS; seven grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and one brother. Friends may sign the online register book and share memories of Eva at www.gilbertsonfuneralhome.com
