MARVIN J NEWGARD

Marvin J. Newgard, of Devils Lake, ND passed away early Sunday morning, July 6, 2014 at his home. He was 74. Marvin, son of Joseph and Mildred (Jones) Newgard was born on April 13, 1940 at Edmore, ND. He was raised and educated in Edmore until the family moved to the Southam/Crary area where he helped out on the family farm. Marvin moved back to Edmore and was working at Hanson Farms. This is when he met his future wife, Janice Fettig in 1954. They began a life of love and were united in marriage on October 24, 1964 at Devils Lake. Besides farming, Marvin worked for Michael Kurtz Construction in Devils Lake. In the mid 1960’s Marv and Janice moved to Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years. Marv began a 25 year career with Concrete Sectional, retiring in 2003 to care for his wife who was battling cancer. Janice died on March 14, 2004. Every important person in Marv’s life had a nickname; his family, special friends and even his dog, Tiny II. His passion was his garden. It took up most of his yard. He not only grew the vegetables he also canned and processed them. He enjoyed experimenting with homemade wines and taking care of the game procured from hunting and fishing. All of these hobbies many times led to a lively conversation and sharing a cup of tea with family and friends. He was dedicated to taking care of the grounds and mowing at the Bethel Cemetery. Marv was a strong willed, good hearted and kind man. He loved each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great grandson unconditionally and they were his world. Marv is survived by his 3 daughters Karla Mercer and Tammy and her husband Wayne Eback all of Devils Lake and Janet Newgard of Lidgerwood, ND; grandchildren Justin, Brett and Amber Mercer, Brian, Travis (fiancé MacKenzie) and Ashley Eback; Hope Elizabeth Newgard; and great grandson Brody Mercer; sister Ella Elshaug, Devils Lake; sisters-in-law Dorene Gregor, Moorhead, MN, Donna Fettig, Minot, ND, Sharon (Thomas) Bird, West Fargo, Donna (Stephen) Krall, San Antonio, TX; several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janice; sisters Lucille Newgard and Joyce Newgard. Funeral Services will be at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Marv will be laid to rest at the Bethel Cemetery, rural Webster, ND.
