BERNIE ZACHER

Bernie Zacher, 71 of rural Devils Lake, ND passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Bernie will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 24th at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Bernie was born on August 17, 1943 in Harvey, ND. She was the daughter of Kasper and Mary (Dosch) Heilman. She graduated from Devils Lake Central In 1961. She participated in the drum line in high school and remained on the reunion committee for several years. Bernie met Lloyd Zacher in 1960 and the two were married on June 1st, 1963. They made their home in Devils Lake where they had two children, Sheila in 1964 and Craig in 1966. They moved to Maddock in 1971 when they bought the Grill Café and remained there until 1978. They then moved back to Devils Lake and Bernie worked at Mann’s Department Store and then at Kmart. She retired from Kmart after 25 years and began a very fun-filled life with her husband. They loved to fish, travel, drive their classic cars and spend all the time they could with their 5 grandchildren. Bernie also loved her Friday nights with her best friends, Patti and Al, going out to the casino, or having her little chats with her sister-in-law Kathy. Bernie was a life-long member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was part of the Infant of Prague Circle with the church. Lloyd’s wife, our mother, our Nana was one of the most amazing and strongest people we have known. She will be missed so Much by all. Bernie is survived by her children Sheila Hendrickson and Craig Zacher both of rural Devils Lake; grandchildren Aaron Zacher, Josh Zacher, Chance Zacher, Karissa Hendrickson and Nickolas Hendrickson; sister Arlene Lape, Trona, CA; brother Donny Heilman, Sioux Falls, SD; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Carol Miller, Washburn, ND, Angie and Don Ziegler, Devils Lake, Shirley and Curt Larson, Tucson, AZ, Dennis “Butch” and Kathy Zacher also Devils Lake; many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd on May 11, 2013; parents Kasper and Mary; sister Shirley Weiss; mother-in-law and father-in-law Ann and Harry Zacher. Serving as Casket Bearers for Bernie will be her grandchildren, Aaron, Josh, Chance, Karissa and Nickolas and neighbor George Wang. Honorary Bearers will be Al and Julie Nieuwsma, Allan and Patty Stock, Carl and Rose Duchscherer, Dean and Marlene Broten, Bill and Marcy Blomquist and Rita and Cordell Streifel. Reading the Scriptures will be Katelyn Hendrickson and Al Nieuwsma and Gift Bearers will be Allan and Patty StocK, Butch and Kathy Zacher and Bernie's grandchildren.
