Floyd J. Austin 80 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident at rural Crary, ND.
Mass of the Resurrection for Floyd will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Father Matthew Kraemer celebrating the Mass. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service and Time of Remembrance at 8:00 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Floyd John, son of Gertrude (Mazurek) and Floyd J. Austin Sr., was born on December 23, 1933 at home in Ardoch, ND. He grew up in Gilby, ND and graduated from Gilby High School in 1951. Floyd entered the United States Army and served his country stateside.
After his honorable discharge, Floyd began working road construction throughout North Dakota. He was united in marriage to his beloved Margie Romberg on October 20, 1962 at St. Timothy’s Church in Manvel, ND. They established their home in Grand Forks and Floyd worked for the Grand Forks County Engineering Department.
In 1966, the family moved to Devils Lake and would call it home from then on. Floyd would begin a 30 year career with the Highway Department as the Ramsey County Highway Department Superintendent, retiring in 1995.
Floyd did not retire to be idle, he kept himself as busy as ever, caring for rental properties, doing carpentry work and working at the family farm in the Brocket area any chance he could. But anything could be put on hold, so he and Margie could follow their grandsons playing hockey with the Minot Wolves. He was their greatest fan and they were his pride and joy.
Floyd loved hunting and fishing and had true stewardship to the land. He was passionate about tree planting and conservation.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, life member of the Elks, Eagles and American Legion.
Our memories of Floyd are so very precious and we will keep them close to our hearts forever.
Floyd’s loving family include his wife of almost 52 years, Margie; sons Scott John Austin, Devils Lake, Neil Austin and his wife Denise, Minot and David Austin also Devils Lake; grandsons Trever, Matthew and Alex Austin all of Minot; sister and brother-in-law Laminda and Conrad Murach, Buxton, ND; brother and sisters-in-law Eugene and Flora Austin, Sonoma, CA, Frances Austin, Center, ND, Marie Austin, Castro Valley, CA and Melva and Clark Becker, Inkster, ND; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jacqueline Austin; brothers Forrest Austin and LeRoy Austin.
Casket Bearers for Floyd will be his grandsons, Trevor, Matthew and Alex Austin, his sons, David and Neil Austin and beloved daughter-in-law Denise Austin. Gift Bearers will be the Dave Freidig Family.
