EDWARD G. "EDDY" SENGER

Edward G. “Eddie” Senger, 83 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake in the loving care of his family. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Eddie will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Edward George, son of Joseph and Dorothy (Kuntz) Senger was born on January 26, 1931 at Gary, Indiana. At a young age, the family moved to Devils Lake and Ed would make Devils Lake his home the rest of his life. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated in 1949 from St. Mary’s High School. As an outstanding high school basketball player, Eddie was recruited to play at Lake Region Junior College. He then joined the North Dakota Army National Guard and was called to active duty during the Korean War, serving in Japan. After his honorable discharge, Ed returned to Devils Lake and operated Dawson’s Bowling Alley. It was at the bowling alley, that Eddie met his beloved pin-setter Helen Fleck and they were united in marriage on May 5, 1956 at Devils Lake. They would live, work side by side and raise their children as a loving couple for the next 58 years. Eddie was never idle and through various employments he held through the years, he developed the skills needed to be a gifted businessman. He worked as a salesman for Pung’s Beverage for several years then started Ed’s Off Sale in 1958, selling the business after twelve years. From 1970 to 1975, he was the owner and operator of Tokio’s General Store and from 1976-1979 owned and operated Fairview Grocery. Eddie loved to fish and decided to open Ed’s Bait Shop out of his home in 1980 and eventually he built Ed’s Bait Shop and also Fisherman’s Plaza south of Devils Lake. He also started Pugsley’s in 1990. He officially retired in 1997. Eddie seemed to have a special talent in many sports, but his passion was bowling, bowling on 3 leagues at once and even was a champion bowler in Japan while in the service. He was named to the North Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame in May 29, 1997. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and in his younger years played Legion Baseball. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and served on the St. Joseph School Board. He also enjoyed membership in the Elks and VFW. We are thankful for the many wonderful years we shared with Eddie. He was a devoted and loving husband, Dad, grandpa and brother. He was a kind, loving, generous, gentle man. He was filled with a deep faith and will be deeply, deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children and their spouses Martine and Jeff Leibfried, Susan Gefroh of Devils Lake, Gary and Monica Senger, Crary, ND, Peggy and Dennis Brockman and Bruce and Mary Senger also Devils Lake; ten grandchildren Travis (Aleyna) and Ryan (Ashley) Leibfried; Amber (Isaac) Moen and Stephanie Gefroh; Chasity (Jesse) Everson, Mathew, Jason and Tyler Senger; Andrew and Nicholas Brockman; grand dogs Benny, Georgie Rose, Truman and Finn; seven great grandchildren Harrison, Holden, Caydence and Ava Leibfried, Kirsten, Halle and Vaya Everson; siblings Joe Senger, El Paso, TX, Frances Miller, Bemidji, MN, Daniel (LaVonne) Senger, Breezy Point, MN, Agnes (Jack) Martin, Munich, ND and BettyAnn (Lyle) Anderson, Devils Lake; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Vesta Senger; brother-in-law Art Miller.
