Marcella Harney Nimmo passed away at home in Devils Lake on October 13, 2014.
Marc was born in Devils Lake on October 11, 1921 while her parents, Ann Rolle and Ambrose Harney, farmed in the Brinsmade area. She graduated from high school in Devils Lake, where she was captain of the girls basketball team. She then spent time working in Minneapolis before heading west to Seattle and southern California.
During WWII, she and several other DL women shared a beach house in Venice California, and most of them worked factory jobs left open by the men away at the War. Her job was at Douglas Aircraft in safety control, and she took personal credit for keeping our Air Force in the sky... While in California, she married Bill Nimmo Jr, returning to Devils Lake when he went overseas as a bomber pilot.
Marc and Bill later moved west to Lewiston Idaho to enter the jewelry business, and she enjoyed being in the Banana Belt with its mellow winters. She always said if she escaped the bitter cold of ND, she would not return, but… return they did. Back in DL, she managed to keep busy in winter with bowling and attending national tournaments with her fun-loving team, darting with the Grandmas’ League, and complaining about the weather. Then, summer would arrive and there would be GOLF. Constantly active and involved in the sport, Marc earned her family nickname, “Grandma Ace”, by shooting a hole- in-one at a Larimore golf tournament in 1975.
She and her lifelong buddy, June Riggin, always kept their friendship and along the way added bingo and casino trips to their list of activities.
She will be missed by her children, Ann, Jack and Jeanne, who will remember her as a lovely lady, fantastic friend and a loyal and supportive mother.
Her three grandchildren, Jack, Stacie and Jack (not a misprint—two Jacks…) will never forget their Grandma Ace.
Family services were held through Gilbertsons. Memorials in memory of Marcella may be directed to Mercy Hospice of Devils Lake.
