Deborah “Deb” Rae Kurtz, 62 of Devils Lake, ND, passed away early Saturday morning, October 18, 2014 at her home in Devils Lake. Deborah Rae, daughter of Clifford and Ruth (McMillan) Olson, was born on February 22, 1952 at Devils Lake, ND. She made Devils Lake her home her entire life. She attended Devils Lake Central School, where she played in the band and was a cheerleader. Deb graduated with the class of 1970 and continued her education at Lake Region Junior College. Deb was united in marriage to her sweetheart, Gary Kurtz, on August 26, 1972 at St. Joseph Church in Devils Lake. Deb ran an in-home Day Care for several years. She also worked at Pugsley’s and North Dakota Telephone Company. For the past 16 years, Deb has been a dedicated employee of Leever’s County Market. Deb was so many things to so many people; a loving and devoted wife, doting mother and grandmother, best sister, aunt, and friend. She followed her granddaughter’s team where ever she was playing basketball and had a reputation for hollering at the referees (but only when absolutely necessary). She and Gary enjoyed so many summers camping, golfing, and just enjoying the outdoors. She was frequently out in the yard, tending her flower gardens, feeding the birds and the squirrels, and frequently in the companionship of a pet dog. She had come to be known as “Mrs. Doolittle”. She so loved spending time with her family and dear friends. We can’t imagine our lives without Deb. We hold so tightly all our precious memories of time spent with her and the love we shared. Deb’s family includes her husband Gary; daughter Stephanie (Scott) Volk, Devils Lake; son Jerad (Heather) Kurtz, Thompson; grandchildren Ellie and Hayden Volk and Jacob Kurtz; brothers Dennis (Cathy) Olson and Barry Olson, Devils Lake, Denise (David) Swanson, Maddock, Dawn (Buck) Hamre, Starkweather, Devonna (Tim) Brenno, Devils Lake; father-in-law and mother-in-law Tim and MaryAnn Kurtz, Devils Lake and in-laws Dan (Peggy) Kurtz, Grand Forks, Tee (Jan) Kurtz, Devils Lake, Linda (Mark) Pajala, Fargo and Colleen (Brad) Severinson, Devils Lake; several aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Darrell and Rodney. Serving as Casket Bearers for Deb will be Richard Kuntz, Lavern Bertsch, Dennis Olson, Barry Olson, Paul Dolan and Justin Swanson. Reading the Scriptures will be her godchild Ashley Myrum. Music will be provided by Peter A. Hager and JoDee Lagein.
