Philip Schiele, 98 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014 at the Heartland Care Center in the loving care of his family. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, ND with Father Matthew Kraemer celebrating the Mass. Philip will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday (Today) beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The Rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Philip James Schiele was born on January 12, 1916 in Devils Lake, ND to John and Regina (Burckhard) Schiele, one of eleven children. Philip was reared on the Schiele farmstead by Rohrville, ND. He was a member of St. Benedict’s (Rutten) Catholic Church for many years. Philip helped his father on the farm until going to the US Army during World War II, entering on March 12, 1942. He was a truck driver (Heavy-245) with the Army. Philip was captured on November 7, 1944 by the German troops while driving a tank. He was liberated by Russian Forces on April 22, 1945. He was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945 as a sergeant. Philip was awarded several medals including the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Prisoner of War. Philip returned home to the farm to help his brother Jacob and parents. He retired from farming in the late 1950’s. Then Philip, his brother Jacob and mother moved to Devils Lake. He was a care giver for his brother and mother. He also worked for C&G for 24 years and then a short time for Lake Lumber in Devils Lake. He did not marry until his mother moved into a nursing home. Philip was united in marriage to Evelyn “Evie” Hanson on October 8, 1968. Evelyn passed away on February 19, 1993. Philip was united in marriage to Anna M. (Laturnus) Hoffart on March 4, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Devils Lake. They moved into Anna’s apartment and made that their new home. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and neighbors and visiting with people. Philip had great faith and enjoyed going to Mass several times a week. Philip really enjoyed having step grandchildren and more precious were the step great grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them play and have a good time. There were lots of pictures taken with him and the great grandchildren. Philip entered Heartland Care Center in October of 2012 and was a resident there at the time of his death. Philip was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, life member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed membership in the Eagles Lodge and VFW. He is survived by his wife Anna of 14 years; step children Mary Ann (Rick) Ginther and Eugene (Karen) Hoffart, Devils Lake and Timothy (Charlotte-deceased) Hoffart, Grand Forks; step grandchildren Brian Ginther, Mandan, Stacey Ginther, Bismarck, Dale (Lisa) Ginther, Devils Lake, Mike (Tanya-deceased May 4, 2014) Ginther, Beulah, Shannon Fitzpatrick and David Fitzpatrick, Grand Forks, Chad Hoffart and Ashley (Matthew) Franzen, Devils Lake, Travis Hoffart also Grand Forks and Josh Hoffart, California; step great grandchildren James Ginther, Clara and Blaine Ginther, Anna, Noah and William Ginther, Destiny, Hailey and Trevor Fitzpatrick and April Hoffart; sister Catherine Senger, Fosston, MN and many nieces and nephews. Philip was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Evelyn; sisters Theresa Schamberger, Julia Kraft, Eva Whitebeck and Christine Graham; brothers Jacob “Jack”, Andrew, Bert, Joseph and John Schiele. Serving as Casket Bearers for Philip will be Brian Ginther, Dale Ginther, Mike Ginther, David Fitzpatrick, Duane Senger and Earl Hanson. Honorary Bearers are members of the Knights of Columbus. Reading the Scriptures will be Mary Ann MacDonald and Gift Bearers will be Mary Ann and Rick Ginther.
