LUELLA F. HERMANSON

Luella “Lue” F. Hermanson, 75 of Hampden, ND passed away early Saturday morning, November 8, 2014 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND with her beloved family at her side. Funeral Services for Lue will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Living Word Free Lutheran Church, Edmore, ND with Rev. Craig Wentzel officiating. Lue will be laid to rest in the Storlie Cemetery, rural Hampden. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service and Time of Remembrance at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Luella Faye, daughter of Ernest and Gena (Strand) Tollefson was born on February 23, 1939 at Edmore, ND. She attended the Fancher Country School and also the Edmore Public School. For several winters, she and her Dad would go out to Seattle where her Dad worked at Boeing and she attended school. While roller skating at the Edmore rink, Lue fell in love with her beloved Clarence “Bud” Hermanson and they were united in marriage on March 13, 1957 in Hampden. They lived in Calvin, ND from 1957 to 1959, then in Langdon, ND for a short time then moved to the Hermanson Farm in the fall of 1959 when Bud’s father passed away. They worked side by side and raised their family as devoted and loving parents. In 1967 they moved to Hampden as Bud took over the operation of the Standard Oil Bulk business. They continued to be very active in the farm operation with their son, Dan. Hampden was still Lue’s beloved home and community at the time of her death. Lue was never idle and along with caring for family she also worked at the Hampden Public School for a time and the Mall Café. She was a 4-H Leader for many years as the children were growing up. She was very crafty and made hundreds of casserole carriers and was soon known as the “Bag Lady”. She enjoyed many other arts and crafts, playing the accordion, playing Trivial Pursuit, BUNCO and FARKLE with anyone willing to play the games. She was an award winning checker player as a young girl in Seattle and that competitive nature stayed with her through the years. If you ever did beat Lue at any game, you were very deserving of that win, it did not come easily. Because she so enjoyed fishing and camping, she was always so excited for the annual family fishing outing at Woodland Resort. It always meant good times, good friends and family and of course good food as no one could cook and bake like Lue. Everyone had a favorite dish and every occasion had a special menu. Even Halloween took on a special meaning with Lue. Popcorn balls were always the treat given out. However when the kids, grandkids and neighbors could no longer come to Lue’s house on Halloween, she would mail the popcorn balls to them. Lue’s kind, loving and gentle nature was beautifully expressed in her poetry. Her poems were always works of love and one of her poems was read by Senator Byron Dorgan on the Congressional Floor and is in the U.S Library of Congress. Lue was a woman of great faith and was confirmed in 1953 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Edmore and was an active member of Zoar Lutheran Church and the WELCA. Lue is survived by her loving family. Her husband of 57 years, Clarence; children and their spouses Jeff and Jolene Hermanson, Grafton, Pam and Tom Schmid, Oberon, Dan Hermanson, Hampden, Sharon and Brian Hoffmann, Munich, Steve and Karla Hermanson, Hampden, daughter-in-law Tina Hermanson, New Rockford; thirteen grandchildren Kole and Kory Hermanson, Jesse, Jordan (Heather), Rachel and Mandy Hermanson, J.D. and Jakob Schmid, Alex, Katie and Kari Hoffmann, Travis and Tia Hermanson; half brother Richard Monroe, Alaska, and half sister Joyce Simpson, Washington; in-laws Curtis and Puring Hermanson, Maple Lake, MN and Joyce and Allen Schanz, Langdon; special family friends Leona Heppner, Mary Werner, Linda Adsem, Dale Long, Karl and Nettie Krogfoss; many nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Mike; granddaughter, Tessa Hermanson; half sisters Lottie Sanderson, Laverne, Gladyce Fossum, Faye Dick, and Cleo Nelson. Casket Bearers for Lue will be her grandsons Kole, Kory, Jesse, Jordan, J.D., Jakob, Alex and Travis. Honorary Bearers are Lue’s granddaughters Rachel, Mandy, Katie, Kari and Tia. Music will be provided by Kari Hoffmann, soloist and violinist, Lori Beck, accompanist, and Joni Haglin, organist.
